At the end of this distance it opens into Lake Mattagami, on which the Hudson Bay Company's post, of the same name, is situated. At the time of our visit, about the middle of September, there were excellent potatoes growing at the post, which we had the pleasure of sampling, owing to the kindness of Mr. Miller, the post-keeper.

Mr. Miller's son rides a bicycle along the level sandy shores of the lake, and these bicycle tracks were the subject of much speculation by the members of our party, before we learned that this mark of modern civilization had found its way so far north into New Ontario.
