Decided to illustrate a scene from The Third Son where Ira walks his dog(s). ... Okay granted in the actual scene, he has both dogs and Roslind with him but I can only do so much.
This December marked the year anniversary of me getting my stylus and actually being able to practice digital art. One of the first things I tried to draw was a pretty similar scene:
Yeah it's not that great. Digital art has a much steeper learning curve than I imagined but I feel like I'm getting visibly better with each piece, so there's that.
Anyway, here's some work in progress screenshots from the more recent piece.
1) The OG sketch
2) Line art (I was experimenting with sketchier line art and it was a lot more natural to me than using a smooth brush).
3) Flat color
4) Lighting and refining details
5) Background sketched in. I didn't do line art for the background bc I was trying to tell myself I wouldn't draw a city even tho the story is set in a city. Then I caved and found a reference ;;
6) Lighting and texture details. This is the last step I spent on my tablet/Autodesk sketchbook.
7) Fiddle with lighting in GIMP, finishing touches.
