The Tropic of Violet series is deeply influenced by Caribbean culture, particularly Voodoo, a vibrant religion that I encountered while traveling though out Haiti. I've read fantasy books inspired by other religious traditions (such as "The Chronicles of Narnia") and felt that the same could be done with Voodoo. However, I wanted to move past the Hollywood cliches of zombies and pincushion dolls and touch upon the deeper elements of this faith.
