Does anyone feel like they’ve gotten worse at writing the more they’ve done it? I was looking at some old drafts and oml- i feel like what I used to write was ten times better than anything I’ve made recently??

Sometimes I really do wish social media wasn’t a thing. I know the internet has done a lot in progressing acceptance, and that’s a beautiful thing. But it’s also sort of miserable? Like, I don’t even have anything besides writing platforms and youtube and being on them makes me drained. That mixed with misinformation, fear mongering, insane beauty standards, the easy attention, and the fact that people are more comfortable interacting online as opposed in real life just makes me hate it. I feel like I’m wasting my life on my phone, doing meaningless things that will make me look back and want to cry because of all the time that went by in vein. I don’t know, maybe I’m being dramatic and whatnot, but I wish people weren’t so obsessed with was online instead of what was in front of them. Does anyone else ever feel like that?

@RMHash maybe, but I don’t think that necessarily means it still doesn’t have negative effects. Even think about the rate of consumerism that comes with social media. Do you think if attractive girls on tiktok didn’t promote stanley cups that everyone would need them in six different colors?

@SojourningGhosts - You just articulated what I was feeling when I woke up this morning. Although I spend my life on a PC, not a smartphone. I am grateful for the existence of online social media that make it easier for me to connect and communicate with people - I am autistic, and it is easier for me to write my thoughts out than it is for me to speak them. Also, I have social anxiety, and I don't get out of the house much, so socializing online is an alternative to extreme isolation and loneliness. The existence of self-publishing platforms, meanwhile, means I can publish my work without having to go through vanity presses, or go the conventional publishing route. I never want to be conventionally published. That $30K advance sounds awesome until you realize your publishing company has bought the rights to your work, and can do whatever it wants, including change it to something unrecognizable, or print a rough draft that you had been told would have seen an editor before going to the presses. But your name will still be on that work... No, thank you. I'll just self-publish. And platforms like Wattpad and Inkitt are great for getting free beta readers and critics, and getting feedback from them. Another blessing. Nevertheless, online social media have changed the world for worse in many ways, and it's toxic. I don't like the rapid pace everybody moves at. I don't like the obsessive focus on image. I don't like the way computer algorithms everywhere filter what we see based on what the algorithms think we want to see, resulting in wind-tunnel effects and a surprising amount of isolation (there's an entire world at our fingertips, but we still only see a few people...) I don't like the constant popularity contests. I don't like the way AI is invading everything.

@normicki EXACTLY like, do I tell you you’re stupid for not knowing how to connect a freaking hotspot? No. Nor would I ever judge you for needing me to close your phone tabs, or hook your computer because you didn’t grow up with it and no one ever showed you how to do it! But guess what, you NEVER TOLD ME HOW TO USE A FREAKING ROTARY PHONE lmao. That’s her favorite example- which is funny because we were watching a movie the other day with a rotary phone, she laughed and said “wow, I don’t even know if I’d be able to use one of those anymore, it’s been so long”
