BEXLEY TURNER

HAYDEN IS HERE. AT Walmart, standing right next to me. I stare at him with wide eyes and glance from him to Nash a few times. Shit. Shit. Shit.

"Bexley?" He repeats, snapping his fingers in front of my face.

"Hey," I give him a small wave. Fuck!

Six years of preparing doesn't pay off. This is so... so real. It's easier doing it in your head. But now that he's actually here, standing in front of me, I have no idea what to say. What am I supposed to say, sorry I left. I got pregnant and I was scared. Fuck no.

"It's really you, huh?" He stares at me, a smile gracing his handsome features, features that have gotten so much better with age.

"It is," I nod.

"Mama, can we go now?" Nash asks from his seat in the cart. He looks at Hayden and then looks at me.

"Mama?" Hayden asks, his blue eyes growing wide. "You have a kid?" He continues, disbelief swimming in his eyes.

"Um, yes," I answer honestly. This can't be happening. "Did you get a new phone number?" I change the subject.

"Don't change the subject, Bexley," he shakes his head. "Is he mine?"

"Look, we can't talk about it right now," I glance at the line of people that starts to move up. "I'm staying at Chrissy's, stop by whenever you can, okay?"

"I'll stop by tomorrow. I want to know everything," he says before pulling out a notepad and pen, scribbling on it and pulling out the paper, and giving the paper to me. "Here is my phone number. Call me if you need anything."

I take the small paper from him and stick it in the back pocket of my jeans. "Thanks."

"Don't thank me. I'll see you tomorrow, gorgeous," he winks and shoots me a charming smile before walking away. That damn smile. A smile I fell for eleven years ago, a smile that I was around for five amazing years. How could I be so dumb to leave him?

❄︎

"Let's go, kid," I help Nash out of my truck and grab his small hand, almost slipping on ice in the process.

"Mama, who was that man at the store?" Nash asks as we walk to the front door of Chrissy's house. Crap.

The snow crunches underneath our boots and I grip the frozen and cold metal of the doorknob. "He was an old friend of mine."

"Oh, okay," he mumbles, walking into the house after I open the door. Setting the bags from Walmart down, I help Nash take off his coat and shoes before taking my own boots and coat off. Opening the door again, I smack Nash and I's boots together, getting most of the snow off before putting them on the welcome mat.

"Go play with your iPad," I point to the couch and Nash happily jumps on the couch before sitting crisscrossed, his iPad now in his hands.

Rushing to the guest bedroom before Chrissy can see me, I hide the bags in the closet before hanging Nash and I's coats on the coat rack. With a sigh, I grab the paper from my back pocket and grab my phone out of my other back pocket before turning it on. I click on the contact icon and type in Hayden's number before sending a text.

Hey, it's Bexley. This is my number, so text me to discuss the arrangements for tomorrow. My fingers fly across the keyboard as I type him the message and then I press send.

I have no idea how he'll react when he finds out that Nash is his child. Hopefully, he doesn't scream at me. I can't handle having him scream at me. It would hurt, but I know that he has the right to. When we were together, we would never get into screaming matches. Just a few stupid arguments here and there, nothing that we couldn't overcome.

I'm so stupid!

My phone hums with a notification and I pick it up, the screen radiating a bright glow on my face when I turn it on.
