I remember when I was just as clueless as her. Not knowing about my heritage and denying that I had a sister, except I hadn't met her at the time so it was even harder to believe for me.
But, she had proof I was her sister. From a strange man. Well, not a stranger to me at least.
While she was staring off into space, I argued with my father. "You brought her here?!" I screamed.
His face stayed the same way it usually does, a calm stoic expression. I didn't like his face. "Yes, I brought her here. Where else am I going to bring her." He said. It wasn't even a question as if he knew I was going to interject.
"Well, you could've at least left her outside, or something. You know I hate her." I argued. His face contorted into a confused look but quickly changed back into its usual expression.
"I didn't think you hated her. I just thought you had major trust issues. And addiction to murder." That last part was only half true. I didn't have an addiction to murder, I didn't even do it often.
"I prefer the word hunting rather than murder," I stated while crossing arms.
"Fine. "Hunting", although I'm pretty sure hunting innocent people, isn't any different from murdering them." He claimed.
I knew he was right but I never liked being claimed as a murderer so I turned away from him and looked at Madi.
She did look homeless. Her Ash-Brown hair was in tatters and her clothes were covered in dirt and grime as if she didn't own any other clothes. She was staring straight at me with wide eyes when I looked over.
I turned back to my father and calmly said "I don't like her. Can I kill her already?" I guess someone asking to kill her wasn't something she heard every day because she immediately ran away. She was out of the door before any of us could say anything.
I watched the front door for a few more minutes before looking back at my dad. I saw an emotion I hadn't seen in a long time.
He was livid.
I couldn't help but be nervous around him now. "WHAT?! Was that for?!" He boomed.
"I don't know why you're so mad about it," I said.
His face hardened. "It took me years to track her down and now she's in even more danger out there than she would've been with you!" He explained.
He sighed and started to walk to the door. "Come on, we're going after her." Before he could walk out the door, I grabbed his arm and tried to stop him but I didn't accomplish much, for he was way stronger than me.
"What's so important about her? She's just like the others. There's no need to protect her. She's been fine for this long. She can fend for herself!" I cried.
He looked at me with all seriousness. "Serabeth, if you value your life then you will help me find her." I didn't value my life but I still feared him every time he said that.
"Fine, I'll help you, but you can't even kill me." I pointed out. He knew what I meant but he still threatened me. "I know I can't kill you, but the threat proves effective" and with that, he went out the door.
I took my jacket from around my waist and put it on. I never take it off, even if I'm sleeping. I quickly followed him and we started our search for Madi.
Since we were in the middle of nowhere, you'd probably say it was easy to find her. It was not. She had gotten farther than we had thought she did. We don't know how, but she did. Now, I've gone searching with my dad a couple of times, and every time, he starts humming 'A Thousand Miles' for no absolute reason. And he did it again this time. "Can you not?" I asked. He looked at me with a slightly amused face. "You don't have authority over me. I'm over 5 thousand years older than you."
"I know that, but that song is just really annoying," I explained
"Yeah, whatever." He did stop though so I was content.
Soon we reached the woods. I remember being told not to go through these woods but I never knew why. It had an eerie feeling to it, like the presence of the dead was lingering inside it.
"She went into the woods. Oh gosh, she's gonna die." I heard him say.
Then he sprinted into the woods. He ran way faster than I did so I couldn't catch up with him. Finally, he stopped in the middle of the woods and was looking around like he had lost all sense of direction. After I caught up with him, he turned to me and grabbed me like he was going insane.
"Serabeth, I'm going to need you to guide me towards her. I can't gather my sense of direction here. Everything's all out of wack. You're the only hope I have. Ok?" No one has ever asked for my help before, usually, I just show up and mess everything up. But, he seemed to be desperate. "Ok, Fine. Take my hand." I said while holding my hand out. He grabbed my hand and we took off to the left.
