A few days later. . .
That's all.
Your POV
"Ugh. . ."
My eyes open every so slightly before closing again. I yawn and wipe away a tear that formed in the corner of my eye from a good night's sleep. Feeling parched, I try to get up and get a glass of water. To my surprise however, something heavy is lying on me, preventing me from standing. I open my eyes as wide as I can, but I end up squinting in the end. I look down and see the cutest thing ever. Nightmare and Dream are cuddling on the other side of the couch, Night spooning Dream protectively. Killer is lying on top of Dust while the latter has an arm wrapped around him. Ink is lying on me, drool dripping off his chin and a huge smile on his face. I swear I hear him mumble "skittles" in his sleep. I giggle a bit and look around the room to find the rest. Horror and Blue are cuddled under a blanket leaning against the couch, Blue's head resting on Horror's shoulder. Cross is leaning against the couch as well, except he is on Dream's end of it. It appears that Nightmare shoved him off the couch because of the awkward position he is sleeping in. I can hear him snoring from over here. I furrow my brows. Where's Error?
I remember last night all of us were watching movies and Error was sitting next to Ink, a pillow separating the two. Ink likes physical affection a bit too much for Error's personal comfort. After that, I remember Error getting up for a glass of milk and then. . . Nothing. Did I fall asleep before he came back? That must be the case because he is nowhere in sight.
I pick up Ink and place him back on the couch, tucking him under the blanket we were sharing. Avoiding stepping on the others, I make my way to the kitchen. I observe the shelves and cabinets, not sure where I should start looking for him. "Error. . ." I call after him in a whisper so as not to wake the other kids. No response. I head to the dining room next and sigh in relief. I find Error sitting at the table, an empty glass of milk in front of him, and his head resting on his arms. His back is rising and falling with each steady breath he takes. He looks truly peaceful.
I smile to myself and walk to the table. I pick up the empty cup and head to the kitchen to wash it. I run the cup under hot water and use the sponge to clean it. I hum to myself a bit while I wash. I reach to turn the water off when I feel something press against my back. I turn the handle to the water before looking behind me and down. A certain purple skeleton is standing there with his head resting on the small of my back looking exhausted. "Awake already, Night? We stayed up pretty late yesterday. You should try to sleep a bit more." He groans in response and doesn't budge.
I sigh and turn around, looking down at the sleep deprived skeleton who is now pressing his head against my stomach. He's stubborn so he won't go back to sleep that's for sure. Maybe this will make him more amiable. . . "How would you like some hot chocolate, Night?" He bristles at this and gives me a curt nod without removing his head from my stomach. I laugh a bit and pat his head affectionately. He shakes my hand off from his head and runs into the dining room, but not before I see the growing blush on his face.
I smile after him and prepare to make him hot chocolate. While I do that, I make myself some coffee to wake myself up a bit more. A little time passes and both mugs are ready. I pick them both up and head to the dining room. There I find Error is awake and talking with Nightmare. Although Nightmare doesn't say much. He just nods and grunts in acknowledgment. Night is not a morning person. Noted. I place the hot chocolate in front of him and smile. "Hot chocolate is all ready so drink up." He places both of his hands on the sides of the mug and nods at me. Just as I'm about to sit down and enjoy my coffee, I see Error eyeing the mug in Nightmare's possession. I place my coffee on the table. "Do you want some hot coco too, Error?" He looks up at me with wide eye sockets and nods fervently. I laugh at this and head to the kitchen. "I'll be back then."
After making the second hot coco, I return to the dining room. I place the mug in front of Error. "There you go sweetie." I don't get a response of any sort. All he does is stare ahead at Nightmare. I look questioningly at him and then turn my attention to Nightmare. My own eyes widen. Oh no. . .
"Nightmare! That's my mug, not yours!"
He looks up at me with wide eye sockets, both hands grasping my coffee mug like his life depended on it. I take the mug from him with a bit of difficulty and gape at the empty mug. He downed it all?! I put the mug on the other side of the table and place my hands on my hips, slightly upset. "Why would you drink that? You knew that it was mine and I gave you a perfectly fine mug of hot coco!" With his eye sockets still wide from all of the caffeine he consumed, he stares up at me with an unreadable look. "The hot chocolate was too sweet. It's disgusting. Yours tasted much better. It was bitter." I open my mouth to respond, but close it again. I. . . Don't know what to say to that.
So instead of saying anything, I sigh and take both my mug and Nightmare's still full cup of coco in my hands. I start off to the kitchen, but I pause halfway. "Please don't do that again Night. Coffee isn't good for someone as young as yourself." As I walk away again I hear him mumble under his breath. "I'm technically 84. Too young, yeah right. . ." I ignore any other comments he makes and wash my mug in the kitchen, drinking the hot chocolate myself.
"MOMMY! MOMMY! WHAT'S FOR BREAKFAST?!"
I wince at the suddenly loud voice of Blueberry and turn to the direction it came from. Standing near the entrance to the living room is Horror and Blueberry, both way too energetic for the morning. Horror runs up to me and starts jumping up and down beside me. "Can we have pancakes?! I LOVE PANCAKES!" Blue follows after Horror and grabs my hand, tugging on me. "CAN I HELP!? CAN I HELP?!" I try to respond, but they are shaking me too hard. I hear someone else enter the threshold and my heart sinks when I see Ink. I can't deal with the three most energetic ones all at once! I brace myself for more yelling or a tight hug, but nothing like that happens. Instead, I hear a firm clap. This draws Horror and Blue's attention. Ink stands by the entrance with his hands pressed together firmly, a serious expression on his face.
"Horror. Blue. Stop hoarding Mútti. She doesn't deserve that."
I smile in relief at my tiny savior. Horror and Blue immediately remove me from their grasps, apologizing in unison. "SORRY MOMMY!" I pat both of their heads and smile wearily. "It's alright you two. If you want to help with food then why don't you fetch me the. . ." I pause in my sentence to think of something they could get that wouldn't end in disaster. I snap my fingers at the realization. "The butter! It would be great if you grab the butter for me from the fridge. Be careful though!" They nod excitedly and open up the fridge, searching for the requested item.
I feel someone hug my hip and find Ink staring ahead at the two blankly with his arms wrapped around me. He's not as energetic as yesterday. It's like he's got two different personalities! I pick him up and he immediately clings onto me, wrapping his arms around my neck and his legs around my midsection. He rests his chin on my shoulder and mumbles something. "Can I have a smoothie?" This child is adorable! I nod my head and then voice my response. "Yeah. I can make smoothies with breakfast." I can tell he's smiling as he buries his head into my neck. I smile softly to myself and head to the dining room where Error and Nightmare are talking. A sit Ink down in the seat next to Error and he immediately places his head on the table out of exhaustion, closing his eyes to rest a bit. Error notices Ink's tired state and, pausing in his conversation with Nightmare, he lightly pats Ink on the back comfortingly.
"FOUND IT!"
I hear Blue yell from the kitchen, so I leave the three at the table to talk. I return to the kitchen and see Blue holding up the stick of butter triumphantly with Horror clapping excitedly next to him. I clap as well before speaking. "Great job you two! Do you think you can hand me the butter?" Blue lights up at this and starts running over to me. Unfortunately, his feet catch on the floor and he trips halfway to me. Horror gasps and freezes in his spot, shocked that his friend tripped. I rush over to Blue and kneel beside him, helping him to a sitting position. The butter that he was holding had slid across the room, luckily still in the packaging, and he stares off at it with wide eye sockets. Then he makes eye contact with me and I see his eye sockets bubbling up with tears waiting to spill. I try to calm him down, but it's too late. As I'm about to shush him and comfort him, he bursts into tears, wailing loud enough to wake the whole neighborhood.
I hug him close and rock side to side in an attempt to stop his cries, but they just keep coming. Horror swiftly heads to the living room and not a second later does Dust appear in the doorway. He sees Blue crying in my arms, his tired and annoyed expression turning to worry. He rushes over and sits beside his friend, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Blue? What's wrong? Are you alright?" Blue, recognizing that voice immediately, turns his head to look at Dust and sniffles a bit. "I-I-I TR-TRIPPED." Dust's look softens and he opens his arms with a soft smile. Blue takes the invitation and hugs him, continuing to cry a little quieter. Dust does a better job at comforting him than I did, but I guess that's because they've known each other longer. They must be really close.
It seems that the ruckus didn't just awaken Dust because the three other skeletons who were sleeping stumble into the kitchen, confused and tired. I have to say seeing Cross carry Dream on his back is one of the most adorable things I've seen, but I can't help focusing on Killer instead. He's about the same size as Blue except he seems more like the quiet type. He looks around the room with wide eye sockets, although I can't tell where exactly he's looking because of his lack of eyelights. His gaze lands on me, I think, and he approaches me. He completely ignores Blue crying in Dust's arms next to me and he speaks softly. "Do you know where I am, pretty lady?"
My heart bursts with happiness and I almost squeal at his adorableness. I try to remain calm and answer his question though. "This is my home. Your friends came to my door the other night looking for a place to stay and I welcomed them in. You were sleeping through it all though." He nods in understanding and only then does he acknowledge Dust and Blue. He lifts Blue from Dust and looks Blue directly in the eye sockets. "Where does it hurt?" After sniffling once, Blue points to his forehead before dropping his hand again. Dust watches the exchange with interest, wondering what Killer will do. I watch with interest as well. Killer places a hand on Blue's forehead and rubs it. "Pain, pain, go away." Then he drops his hand and smiles at Blue. "You're all better now!"
Blue touches his forehead again and smiles at Killer. "I DO FEEL BETTER. THANK YOU KILLS!" With a renewed energy, Blue pops off the floor and runs to the dining room to talk with the others. Horror, who came back in to the kitchen, runs after him yelling for him to wait up. I stand up from the floor and sigh, just realizing how tense I am. Cross walks up to me with Dream still on his back. He gives me a simple nod before walking off to the dining room to join the others. I turn back to the last two and see that Dust is hugging Killer tightly. "I'm glad you're doing okay Killer. I thought you'd never wake up!" Killer pats his back comfortingly and I can't help smiling at the two. After a little while, Dust lets go of his friend and heads to the dining room. Now it's just Killer and me.
"Pretty lady?"
I freak out on the inside again, but keep calm on the outside. "What is it Killer?" He walks up to me and hugs me the same way Ink did. I hug him back, slightly confused by his gesture. "Thank you." He mumbles into my side. I furrow my brows in wonder and question him. "What for?" Killer pulls away slightly to look up at me with big eye sockets, a smile on his face.
"For saving us."
