I ran and ran but she always seemed to stay four feet ahead of me. I was panting heavily, my heartbeat ringing in my ears by the time I realised she'd stopped.
There she was standing, rigid underneath the wrought iron sign that read "Downtown Cemetery." Through my panting I managed to say:
"Why have you brought me here?"
The wind stilled yet her hair and dress continued to float as if picking up some other air current. Suddenly she spoke, her voice like a rustle of dead leaves.
"Come."
A shiver went down my spine. Then she started to walk. Well, I say walk when what I really mean is ominously floated while moving her feet to make it look like she was walking. Against my better judgement and Alex's voice in my head telling me 'walk the hell away' I began to follow her through the cemetery.
Grave after grave we passed, me staying four feet behind while she drifted ahead. Eventually, she stopped next to a large willow tree where two graves stood obscured by the draping branches.
I approached cautiously from behind to see her pale arm outstretched, thin finger pointing directly in front of her. The stone was old and was eroding, crumbling at the corners with moss creeping it's way up the sides.
"Me." Her voice startled me out of my trance. I made a noise of confusion and waited for her to explain.
"Me." She repeated. Well I'm obviously not getting an explanation. I peered closer at the stone and wiped away some of the dirt to read:In loving memory of
Annie Rodriguez
May she live on"Annie..." I whisper,"you're Annie, aren't you?"
Dead, black eyes bare into mine in a quiet confirmation. I tear my eyes away from her penetrating gaze and focus on the grave beside hers.
This one is newer and appears to have very few words inscribed on it; in fact, it has no words on it at all!
I turn to her, confused:
"I don't...understand."
"Closer."
I knelt down in front of the stone and sure enough there were words chiselled into it. No, then were being inscribed before my very eyes!In loving memory of
Liam Mason
Buried aliveMy blood ran cold and a whipped round just in time to see the girl shove me backwards into the now open grave.
Darkness consumed me and the light of the world began to edge away. All I could think about was the only person I thought could save me:
"Alex!" I screamed. No. No this can't be happening. The light is going fast, please.
"Alex!!" I need you. Please, save me. I'm going I can feel it.
"ALEX!!!"
