12 - Where are we?

We were all so happy to finally have electric light again, because on the one hand it means a sign of civilization and on the other hand, we finally don't need flashlights anymore to find our way in the darkness.

However, none of us, except André, has thought about what the sudden bright light does to the eyes when you have been in the dark for maybe several days. It took maybe two or three minutes before our eyes felt irritated and even slightly painful. Automatically, you want to rub your eyes then, but André immediately scolded us not to dare rub our eyes.

Our new self-appointed leader André was right. We haven't showered or washed for days and rubbing dirt and sweat into our eyes would only make things worse. He pulled out a pack of wound compresses from his backpack, moistened them with water, and passed them to us. We should use it to cool and clean our eyes.

After another maybe five minutes, with cooling and dabbing, our eyes began to settle and feel better. We still blinked more than usual, but it got better with each blink.

As soon as I could see clearly again, I looked at the others and was already startled by what I saw. The clothes were dirty and some of them were even torn and full of holes. Beard roots and everyone, really everyone was just dirty from head to toe. Even a long shower is not enough. You have to let this dirt soak in first.

After a break for our eyes of maybe 15 minutes, I'm just guessing, we walked down the hall to the next door. Cheng counted to three and pushed the door handle down. A click was heard and the door popped open almost by itself.

Stale air, dust and a strange smell came towards us. The light, which apparently turns on automatically when someone enters the room, turned on and seemed less bright than the one in the hallway. One by one we went into the large room, on whose door, to the labs, is written.

Thanks to the door sign, we naturally assumed we were entering a lab. Instead, that was not the case, but took us to a room that is like a waiting area in a hospital. Three corridors awaited us. Straight ahead, down the right, and down the left.

And although we all just wanted to get out, the urge to discover made itself known to all of us. All of a sudden and without being asked, of course. Before we decided on a corridor, I turned around again and looked at the sign on the door we were just passing through. "Research Facility - Access for designated personnel only" it said.

Research facility? What were they researching there? Who were they researching there? The cave? Or the thing that attacked the others?

We decided to go down the left corridor first. Above the hallway is a sign that says "Patient Room - Please Announce Visit." We went into the hallway, by the way, the walls here are all painted white. In some places the paint is already peeling a little bit, otherwise everything looks neat.

In the corridor itself there are 10 doors. Each door is numbered. The first one says "Patients 100 -110", the second one says "Patients 111 - 120" and so on. We opened each door and in each room was the same. 5 bunk beds for two people each. As well as two wide closets divided into 5 narrow closets each. No windows!

My brother and André put Han in one of the beds so he could continue sleeping and we could look at everything else. Leni is now also lying in one of the beds and resting. André hopes we might find some antibiotics or penicillin, something that will help Han. But before we go to look around, we sit together and talk. André wants someone to stay with Han and Leni. Yanli volunteered.

Before I go into some details, I have to get this off my chest. We are apparently in a research and development facility underground. It immediately reminded me of the movie Resident Evil, where they were in the so-called Hive in the first part. It's set up similarly here, like a beehive, only much smaller than the one in the movie.
