Audrey's POV
The next day we went to the shop to work, Anakin and I explained to Watto how Qui Gon wanted to enter us in the race. He was not taking it well. Thankfully, Qui Gon walked in, taking Watto's attention.
"The twins say that you want to enter them in a race. How are you going to pay the entree fee? Not with Republic credits eh?!" Says Watto in a mocking voice.
"My ship will be the entry fee." Says Qui Gon calmly, he pulls out a hologram of a sleek, silver ship. Wow. I thought that is one amazing ship.
"Hmm, a Nubian, not bad," mutters Watto, "But what will they ride? They smashed my pod in the last race.
I wince," It wasn't our fault!" I say, " Sebulba flashed us his vent ports. We managed to solve the pod. Well, mostly..." Anakin gives me a sympathetic look.
Watto laughs and says," That you did. The twins are good, no doubts there."
"I have acquired a pod in a game of chance. It's the faster ever built." Says Qui Gon. I could feel hope building up inside of me. What was Watto going to say?
"I hope you didn't kill anyone I know for it." Watto chuckles. "Let's see, you supply the pod and the entry fee, and I supply the twins, and we'll split the winnings 50 50, I think." Says Watto, looking at Qui Gon.
"50 50?" Qui Gon repeats." If it's going to be 50 50, I suggest that you front the cash for the entry. If we win, then you get all the winnings, minus the cost of the parts I need. But if we lose... you get my ship. Either way, you win." Qui Gon smiles encouragingly at Watto. I take a deep breath and wait for Watto's final decision.
Watto flutters around, deep in thought finally he answers, "Deal." He says, shaking Qui Gon's hand. Qui Gon gives us a smile and walks out of the shop. "Your friend is a foolish one, I think." Says Watto, looking at us triumphantly.
"We'll see," I say, trying not to show my nerves.
After that, Watto let us go for the day, and we decided to finish up the repairs on our pod. A few minutes into fixing the pod, our friends walked over to see what we were doing.
"Hey Ani, hey Audrey!" They all say
"Wow," breathes our friend, Kitser, pointing at R2, "Is that a real Astro droid? How do you always get so lucky?"
"That's only half of it, "brags Anakin," We're entered in the Boonta Race tomorrow."
"What?!" says Kitser," with this?"
"You've been working on that thing for years. It's never gonna work," Says Amee discouragingly.
"You two are such jokes." says Wald," Come on, let's go play ball. You two are going to be bug squash." All of our "friends" run away laughing. Except for Kitser who stayed behind to help.
I sigh, Wald and Amee's words had struck me in the heart, and I began to doubt myself. I shake my head. No. Qui Gon, Padme, and Jar Jar needed us to win. Turning back to our pod, I began to secure the last few wires.
"You don't even know if that thing is going to work." Says Kitser.
"It will," says Anakin, " It has to." He adds under his breath just loud enough for me to hear.
"I think it's time to find out." Says Qui Gon, walking up to us." Here," he hands Anakin a power couplet. "Use this power charge."
"Yes sir!" says Anakin, handing me the power couplet to connect to the pod.
