January - After the Holidays
Maya
He was burning daggers into our souls. Farkle stared across the table at me and Lucas, trying to figure out how to address what he saw on New Years.
We looked at each other in silence for what felt like 10 minutes before Farkle finally took a breath, shaking his head in disappointment. "How could you two do that to Riley? Especially after everything that's happened."
"We just got caught up in the moment, okay?" Lucas tried to convince Farkle, but he wasn't buying it.
Farkle looked at me, "why was there a moment to get caught in?" he pried. "Why would you go to the roof together in the first place?"
"In my defense, I was tricked." I looked at Lucas a faked a smile. "Someone really wanted to talk to me, and wasn't taking the silent treatment as an answer."
"So this is Mr. Perfect's fault. Makes so much sense." He glared across the table at Lucas, like he had just cracked the case."
I sighed and Lucas grabbed my hand under the table. "If you're going to place blame, you have to put it on us both. My lips were there too."
"It's really not as bad as it looked. We hadn't seen each other or even spoken since the fight." Lucas tried getting his best friend to back down. "It was just a one time thing."
"Why did you want to talk to Maya so badly that you felt the need to trick her into being alone with you? "
We looked at each other, silently trying to figure out which version of the truth to go with. "I'm pressing charges against Josh." I blurted out. "Lucas knows my situation with him better than anyone else, and because we weren't speaking, I didn't tell when I first made the decision."
"Exactly." Lucas chimed in. "I was hurt that she didn't tell me, but I also wanted her to know that I'd be here for her when she needed me, even though she was clearly upset with me."
Farkle seemed to have calmed down, clearly processing the information he'd been given, trying to decide if he trusted us. "I still think you should tell Riley what happened."
"I really don't think that's necessary." Lucas quickly spoke up. "I mean, you know how she gets. We don't need a rehashing of the last few months. Why rock the boat over nothing? New year, fresh slate."
Before Farkle could think about the fact that Riley's boyfriend wants to keep a secret from her, I tried my best to draw it back in. "Look Farkle, she is my best friend. I would never do anything to hurt her. It's been a rough semester for all of us. Can't we just forget about it, and move forward?"
He nodded in agreement and looked between us. "You're both right. Junior year has put all of our friendships through the wringer so far. As long as whatever you two had going on is over, I guess I can forget what I saw."
I can't believe that actually worked. In fact, I'm surprised that he hadn't already told Riley about the kiss. Maybe it's because he's just as tired as we are of the drama, and wants to believe that we're not terrible friends. However, he doesn't know what really happened on the roof, and it's probably for the best.

Going into my bedroom, with Lucas following closely behind, I let out a sigh of relief and fell onto my teal beanbag chair. "That's one crisis averted for this week."
Lucas sat at on the floor in front of me and scratched the back of his neck, "We haven't really talked about what happened before we got caught."
Slowly nodding my head, I nervously bit my lip and looked at him. "We were each other's first time."
