EDITED
As soon as Haylie got home from the gym, where she had practiced with Dan for an hour, she flopped into bed and fell asleep without even changing.
She couldn't have been asleep very long when she was woken up by feather kisses over the side of her face. "It's not like you to nap." Derek whispered with another kiss when he heard her heart start to beat different.
Haylie groaned and nestled deeper into the pillow. "Somebodies been keeping me sleep deprived." She teased, still not opening her eyes. "I was having a nice dream." She confessed and while he had a plan, he couldn't help himself from propping his head up on a fist and watching her.
"About what?" He whispered, pushing some fallen hair back towards her ponytail.
"My mom."
He had never heard her talk about her mom. He knew she was gone. He knew she is the one that got Haylie into Ballet but that was it. He said nothing as she sighed, and her hand reached up behind her ear. "Did you know we had the same birthmark?" Derek took her fingers away and brushed his own over the mark he was all too aware of. "I didn't think it was possible, but it was exactly the same. In the same place. My dad used to say it was because we were part of the same soul."
She started to smile and finally opened her eyes. "It's been a while since I've had a nice dream about her."
He didn't have the words to respond. So, instead he moved forward and pressed his lips to her head. "I want to let you go back to sleep." He mumbled making her groan and move away from him.
"Which means you aren't going to let me."
He couldn't help his laugh. "I need you to come somewhere with me." She frowned and looked to see he was still fully dressed. "Do you trust me?"
She met his eyes and nodded. She didn't know when that trust snapped into place, but it was his. She trusted him with her life.
"What are we doing here?" Haylie asked as she shut the door to the Camaro and waited for him to walk over to her to explain. "Stiles texts me. Him and Scott are in detention he's not here."
It turns out, Stiles had spent the day trying to help Scott control his anger because he didn't believe Derek was the right man for the job. Haylie decided it was in her best interest to stay far away from that.
"It's alright, trust me." He repeated but didn't wait for her to follow as he ignored the closed sign and opened the door to the vet clinic.
"Scott!" A voice carried from the backroom. "You're late again. I hope this isn't going to become a habit."
Haylie followed Derek into the room and saw the vet was writing something but his smile dropped when he saw it wasn't Scott. "Can I help you?"
"I hope so." Derek said simply. "I want to know about the animal you found, with the spiral on it's side."
The vet looked as confused as I felt. "Excuse me? What animal?"
Derek pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket. "Three month ago. The deer. Remember?"
Haylie didn't even get a glimpse of the paper, instead watching for the vets reaction.
"Oh yes. It was just a deer. I didn't find it, they called me to see if I had ever seen something like it."
"And what did you tell them?"
Haylie moved forward a fraction, not liking the tone Derek had taken on. "I told them no."
Derek watched him for a moment before he cocked his head, taking a few steps closer to the vet. "Did you hear that?"
"Hear what?" Haylie wanted to move between them when she saw the way Derek hadn't missed a step.
