"No Mom, don't send a car today. I wanted to walk."
"You should of waited (Y/n). I pay your chauffer good money. If you wanted him to take you somewhere like shopping, I would of given you some spending money before I left this morning for my art gallery."
"That's not the reason I wanted to walk Mom. I just wanted to get some air, maybe stop by Starbucks on my way home." There was so much more you weren't saying, but your parents would hardly ever let you decide anything for yourself. All you wanted was a few hours where your decisions were your own.
"Do you have enough money? Do you have your pepper spray on you? Is your phone fully charged? Don't walk in the park you're going to get harassed. Don't give money to the homeless. Make sure there are always lots of people around so you don't get cornered."
Your eyes nearly rolled to the back of your head. It wasn't like at least some of that wasn't good advice but it was full of the privileged and sheltered life you'd lived since a young child. Even though it was clear you'd stopped listening she rambled on for a few more minutes till you told her you were walking into a shop and would be home later.
Finally she said goodbye and hung up, leaving you feeling rather exasperated. After placing your phone in your purse you swung the long spaghetti strap over your opposite shoulder and immediately crossed the street to head into the very park your mother had warned you about. Little did she know you'd walked through it before and spent time there relaxing after ballet practice almost all the time.
This place wasn't no where near as bad as she made it out to be. Sure there were unruly looking crowds and maybe once or twice had someone having a hard time asked you for money, but simple responses got them to walk away. It left a bad feeling inside your gut to turn someone away when you clearly had money to spare.
You did believe in the small notion that if you lent money to one person eventually your kindness would be taken advantage of. Specially when it was impossible to help everyone. With a shake of your head, you tried to clear those anxious thoughts and enjoy the greenery of the park.
After a few minutes you found a bench to sit and relax on. For awhile you people watched taking in the babies being pushed in their strollers, the few joggers wearing shorts that really gave their legs enticing shape, and the kids further away using the playground set. Honestly it didn't have the best equipment but a slide, swings, and colorful jungle gym is all they needed to have a good time.
Your head tilts up as some excited voices sail down the sidewalk. Next thing you know a guy with black hair is sliding past you on his skateboard. He's quickly followed by someone with red hair and sharp toothed grin, hollering something like 'I'm going to beat you!' His smile was honestly infectious, and he seemed hyper like he had to much candy or maybe chugged an energy drink.
Thinking those two guys are simply having a race, you start to stand up and step forward. However, an angry baritone calls out to you getting your head to jerk in his direction. Your eyes widen noting blonde hair and the skateboard bellow his feet gliding him at a brisk speed right in your direction.
"Out of the way dumbass!"
Out of pure instinct, your leg extends using all the momentum you can muster to leap out of his path. Thanks to your movement he misses you completely, but turns skating backwards for a few seconds to watch you flare out both of your arms keeping your body leveled. Both of your hands go up, your tippy toes curling inward as you spin once and come to a stop.
