"I'm sorry, were you talking about me?" He smirked.
Oops.. I think we might have made him mad by referring to him like we were talking about our two year old siblings. That would have hurt anyone's dignity. Just because he was such a sweetie, didn't mean that he was a pushover.
However, I think that Nathalie might have had a hard time understanding that.
"What're you doing here?" Nathalie stood up, she didn't look like she'd done anything wrong by referring to her brother as a two year old.
Maybe that was what had riled him up, and not to mention-
"If you only wanted to friendzone me, then why'd you lead me on?" He looked at me icily, it was the first time I'd ever seen him being so... not himself. And it hurt me to see him like that just as much as it hurt him to hear my rejection of his feelings. But I really didn't love him, and I myself hated the friendzone... but it couldn't be helped.
"Look, I can explain-" I tried to offer, but he cut me off.
"Save it, you're excused." He turned around, his shoulders slumped in defeat.
Watching him walk away, powerless to say or do anything to make him come back gave me the saddest feeling I'd ever felt in my life. It hurt more than the time Luke ditched me at night to hang out with his ex. And that was saying something.
"It was true then," I turned back to Nathalie, "you really did have ulterior motives"
"Err... don't take it the wrong way, I really am your friend, and Zack has genuine feelings for you, but that wasn't part of the plan."
"Oh yeah? Then his falling for me had nothing to do with letting my guard down?" I fumed.
"Not really, we don't read as many clichés as you do" She confessed.
"I get it" I nodded my head, "But does that mean that you both have heirlooms too? Don't tell me, you both have the heirlooms of-"
She cut me short, "Yes, it means that I have the stopwatch as an heirloom nothing shiny like your bracelet, but it does give me advantage over my opponents."
"I know, I was told to study the properties of each and every heirloom present in the seven families. Let me guess; Your heirloom possesses the ability to turn back time itself, right?"
"Yes, but it can only be used once. I can't use it again." She shook her head ruefully, 'What a pity. There are a lot of things I'd have wanted to reverse in my life."
"Me too." I said sadly. All the things we wished we could do... But they were always going to remain wishes. Forever.
And there was nothing we could do to change that.
"What kind of superpower does Zack have?" I asked her suddenly.
"You haven't guessed it yet?" Nathalie suddenly became very serious.
"He has the ultimate power that that should never be used; The one that can do the most unforgivable damage which can never possibly be reversed: The power of death."
I think my reaction had better be left alone after that.
. . .
"I suspect that the ultimate goal that Emily Dupont has in mind is your heirloom, not her son's."
"But she doesn't even know that I have it!" I exclaimed in shock. It was impossible, my heirloom only had the powers of shapeshifting. Unless this was Ladybug all over again, and my heirloom had the 'hidden power' I'd read of.
See, the heirlooms had been passed down the families for generations. In the beginning, they signified the power shift from father to son, until their hidden abilities were discovered.
Five families, Five heirlooms. Then... how did Zack come to have an extra heirloom?
I knew all the holders of the heirlooms by heart:
Sabrina's family, The Swift Enterprises: Possessed the power of telecommunication.
Maya's family (She had a rich background, until her father's company went bankrupt) She had the heirloom of the 'Third Eye'. Meaning she could see through tricks or disguises of any sort.
Luke's family: Possessed the heirloom of psychokinesis. The ability to discover the darkest secrets hidden within the person's soul.
Nathalie's family: The Sancoeurs. Possessed the ability to turn back time. Only to be used once in the holder's lifetime.
My family: Possessed the heirloom of Shapeshifters.
That left... Nathanial's family. They possessed the heirloom of ultimate destruction. Which was why they were regarded as the most dangerous of all the heirloom holders.
There was no other heirloom in history. Unless... Nathalie was lying: Zack wasn't her brother. He wasn't from her family.
Nathanial was never the true heir to Romero Enterprises; Zack was.
And he possessed the heirloom of destruction. He was Cat Noir, except that unlike the latter, he could not control the power, it was too much to take.
I suddenly felt scared for Zack; I hoped he'd never have to use it.
I really wished it with all my heart.
So, why did I still feel so uneasy?
. . .
I was on my way home, when Luke parked his bike right next to me. It was windy, and I was already in a worried frame of mind.
His arrival really didn't make things better for me at all.
In fact, seeing him only ended up making my whole day worse.
My blood automatically started to boil as I remembered the unfortunate conversation I'd heard between him and Angelina earlier.
"Stop bothering me, Luke' I snapped at him, "What do you want now?"
He took of his helmet, his tousled hair sticking out at odd angles.
Damn! I grumbled to myself, why did he have to be such an eye candy when I was trying so hard to stay mad at him?
Correction: I was mad at him.
So I ignored him pointedly. It was kind of fun watching him follow me with his bike while I stayed put, going on the sidewalk.
"Fine. If you won't let me talk to you, can I at least stalk you? its what playboys are most famous for doing"
"No"
