Four POV
Her words ring in my ears. "Baby coming NOW."
I try not to panic and remain calm for Tris. She is obviously in a lot of pain and I need to be strong for her. Less than a minute later she exhales and stands up straighter."I think," the she breaths, "the contraction's over."
"We need to get you to the infirmary Tris."
"But," she stammers, "the baby's not supposed to come for another month and we don't have the hospital bag and-"
"Tris," I say stopping her. I put both my hands on her shoulders. "Christina can get bring us the hospital bag and the doctors can take care of everything else, but we can't do that unless we go."
She nods. I quickly grab the gifts and drop the in the apartment. We begin our walk to the infirmary. About 8 minutes later Tris has another contraction, groaning as it starts. She squeezes my hand tightly. Eventually we make it to the infirmary. We go the the lady at the front desk.
"Hello how can I help you." She asks without looking up from her computer.
My wife's in labor." I say holding Tris' hand. She types something into her computer.
"Who's her obstetrician?" She asks
"Dr. Sandra." Tris says
"Ok...please fill these out and we'll be with you in a minute." She says handing us some paperwork and a clipboard.
5 minutes later we have all the paperwork filled out. We hand it back to the clerk and she sends us into the labor and delivery ward. Tris changes into a hospital gown and lies on the table. After about 15 minutes and two more contractions a nurse comes in.
"Hi I'm nurse Dana, I'll be examining you. So Mrs. Eaton it says here," she looks at the clipboard, "that you are only 8 months pregnant."
"That's correct." Tris says getting more anxious by the minute.
"And how far apart are your contractions?" She asks
"Every 7-8 minutes. They are each about a minute long." A concerned look spreads over Nurse Dana's face."Ok Mrs. Eaton I'm going to check how dilated you are now." She says putting gloves on
Tris puts her feet in the leg rests and the nurse checks her cervix. Tris winces momentarily but is fine as she finishes.
"Ok you are already about 3 centimeters dilated. I'm got in to page Dr. Sandra immediately. We'll get you some medicine for the pain but for now nothing to eat or drink." She leaves the room and Tris starts sobbing. I immediately grab her hand and hold her face with my other hand forcing her eyes to meet with mine.
"What if," she sniffs, "there's gonna be something wrong with him...what if he gets sick from coming over a month early, and what if I'm not ready to be a good mom!" She sobs
"Tris," I sooth, "the medical staff is going to take great care of you and our son. And are you kidding?! You're gonna be the best mom Dauntless have ever seen. And I'm here for you till the end of time. I won't leave your side once through it ok?"
She sniffs again, smiling slightly, and says, "This is why I love you so much."
"Not nearly as much as I love you." Softly I kiss her forehead, then her nose, then her lips, and lastly her baby bump.
15 minutes later, after Tris had been hooked up to all the monitors needed, had been given pain meds, had her blood drawn, and in IV inserted...Dr. Sandra walks in.
"Hello you two!" She said with a smile, "I hear baby wants to come out a bit earlier than expected."
Tris nods."Well your labor is definitely progressing. There's no way we are able to keep baby in at this point. He's gonna do what he wants from now on."
"Is he gonna be ok?" Tris asks nervously
"Well that depends," Dr Sandra starts, "normally babies who are born 4 weeks early end up fine. At the most they just have to stay in the hospital a few extra weeks....but with your baby it's more complicated. The problems with your babies growth throughout your pregnancy could have an affect on him...long term."
"What you do mean?" I ask
"Well his lungs won't be fully developed and he will be more susceptible to illness. He could also be deficient in many areas. We are gonna do everything we can to make sure he is healthy though okay?"
Tris nods, her face still damp with tears from earlier.
"We're going to have an entire team of people just for your baby. He will need to stay in the hospital a few weeks after he is born. And if necessary we will move you both to Erudite." Dr. Sandra informs us, "I'll be back to check in on you in an hour. For now get some rest." Tris nods again and with that Dr. Sandra leaves****
6 hours later
Tris POVI am in the most pain I have ever been in in my entire life. My contractions are every 2 minutes now and last longer and are more painful no matter how much pain medication I am given. I groan and wince as another contraction comes.
"Is there any way you can give her any more pain medicine?" Four asks one of the nurses.
"I'm sorry, but we've given her the highest dosage we can."
"What about an epidural." I exhale
"Dr. Sandra says it's be too great a risk for the baby. I'm sorry I wish there was more we could do." The nurse says. A moment later there is then a call coming from the phone they have in our hospital room. Four answers it.
"It's your parents." He says, "They're on their way."
Around an hour ago I had Four call and tell all our family and friends that the baby is coming. Christina brought us our hospital bag too. A few minutes later I have another contraction. I grip the bedsheets and grit my teeth trying not to scream. Dr. Sandra walks in. "I'm going to check you again to see how dilated you are now ok?"I nod and lift my legs into the leg rests. After my contraction is over she checks. It only hurts momentarily. Her eyes widen after she does the examination.
"What is it??" I ask, my heart beating quickly.
You're dilated to a 9 almost a 10. And according to the monitor...baby's heart rate is dropping so we need to get this baby out now." I am stunned by the news she just gave me. Suddenly everyone is rushing around. More doctors and nurses come in and they start to prepare everything for the delivery. I look at Four. He try's to put a brave face on for me but deep down I can tell he's as terrified as I am.
Everything goes by so fast. Dr. Sandra comes back with everything needed for the delivery. The next contraction I have I start to get the urge to push but the nurses tell me to wait. It's excruciating painful.
"Ok Tris," Dr. Sandra says sitting down. "On your next contraction I'm gonna need you to push." I nod my heart rate continually rising. My next contraction comes and I push, pain searing through my abdomen down. One of the nurses counts down from ten every time I push. It goes on like this for a while, but then the real pain comes. I yell out in pain as I push, squeezing Four's hand so hard I fear I'm going break it.
"I can't do it." I cry out of breath.
"Yes you can Tris." Four says, "you are the strongest person I know. There is no one else here that can do this but you. You can do this Tris." He says kissing my hand. I nod and keep pushing.
"That's it keep going." Dr. Sandra says. Everything hurts as I do as she instructs. I cry out in pain most of the time but I keep going. Four momentarily goes and stands beside Dr. Sandra and his eyes widen.
He immediately rushes back to my side looking like he's trying to forget what he just saw. "Regret doing that?" I laugh. He chuckles slightly.
"Ok Tris I need you to keep pushing and don't stop." Dr. Sandra says with urgency in her voice. I do as she says. A minute later I feel a release and that's when I see him my sweet baby boy. But they don't give him to me and the most terrifying thing of all is I don't hear him cry.
"Is be okay?!" I ask
No answer...A doctor and a couple nurse surround my baby, blocking my vision of him. I can't tell what they're doing but they look worried.
I say it louder this time, a sob threatening to escape my body..."Is he ok??!!"
