“Terry, thank you so much but I just can’t accept this.” I said as I tried to push the gym membership card back into Terry’s hands. It was no use though, she folded her arms and tried on her best ‘serious face’ to which I couldn’t help but giggle.

“Aha! See Alice? You’re smiling which means you like the gift which means you are going to accept it.” Terry pressed on as she closed my hands firmly around the piece of shiny plastic.

“But I-“

“No buts!” She swiftly cut me off. I sighed and decided to give in. We had been going back and forth for the past twenty minutes and it seemed like Terry just wasn’t going to take no for an answer- as usual.

“Ok fine, I accept the free membership. But I still stand by what I said: Working out in my room and jogging in the park would get me into shape just as well as all those fancy machines at your father’s gym.” I repeated, perhaps for the tenth time today.

A wide grin spread over Terry’s face as she twittered in her high-pitched voice, “I know, I know. You don’t want to be a bother,” She emphasized the last phrase by making quotation marks in mid-air, millimeters from my face.

“Well you are not a bother! Plus, we’ll get to be gym buddies now! Yay us!” She chimed out, clapping her hands together, enthusiastically jumping up and down.

“Gym buddies” with Terry Johnson. Somebody kill me now. Let me give you a little back-story as to how I landed myself in this mess. Little Miss Terry was the daughter of Jim Johnson, the owner and founder of Platinum Gym, one of the most prestigious work-out spots in London. All the rich snobs paid ridiculous amounts of money in turn for the privilege of sweating away their first-world problems in a glamorous, air-conditioned space, filled with the latest machines to help you burn that lard!

Terry was very stereotypical as far as teenage girls went- she had glossy bleach blond hair, blue eyes and a figure to die for. All the boys in our school were at their knees. All it took was a single glance and gesture to have them running to her like doggies to their master. Besides her looks, she didn’t have much to offer. I’m pretty sure if she took an IQ test her score wouldn’t exceed 70. Oh well, sometimes I feel like God gives either brains or boobs.

Oops, I think I went a little off-topic here. Anyways, since Terry’s intelligence wasn’t something for her to boast about I often helped her out with her studies. Mostly History since she just couldn’t seem to get her head around how Hitler could possibly have grabbed the hearts of so many.

“But look at him! He is so not hot. And oh-em-ge, that moustache thing he has going on has totally got to go! If I were Germany, I would not even look at the guy.” Was Terry’s reply when I told her about Hitler’s rise to power. Sigh.

Basically, twice a week after school, plain, ordinary, old me who didn’t have a rich daddy, didn’t own twenty pairs of Jimmy Choo’s and quite frankly could not care less about such things, would go to her villa and try to pry some knowledge into Terry’s brain. Her puny, acorn-sized excuse of a brain, that is. At first, she wanted to pay me for the tutoring sessions but I managed to convince her I was doing this because we were ‘friends’. As selfish as it sounded, being ‘friends’ with the most popular girl in school made my life a whole lot easier. However, it did have one disadvantage-Terry wanted to spend quality time with me. By quality, I meant all the fluffy, mushy friend stuff. Now as much as I enjoyed not being openly made fun of by the ‘cool people’ at school, I wasn’t ready for that type of sacrifice.  Unfortunately for me, the free membership at her father’s gym was her latest idea to strengthen our bonds. She must have heard from Steven (my ultimate best friend for ever and ever) that my New Year’s resolution was to finally get my body in shape. Just to clarify: I am not fat or overweight or any of the sorts. I just want to have a nicely toned body, I mean who doesn’t?

Oh Steve, why? Why did you have to tell her?

Well, what had been done couldn’t be un-done. So, I braced myself for a torturous gym-session with Terry Johnson tomorrow.

Little did I know what amazing things were about to take place.
