Chapter 2
A mile from school, I reached the Coven's household. I got out of my car and I noticed that all the house lights were off. 'That's strange.' I thought. The only time their lights are off was when they weren't home; but they should be home. Instead of going back into my car I walked to the door and knocked on it. I stepped back as the house flooded with light. Seth opened the door part way and peeked outside. When he saw that it was me, he looked around checking to see if I was alone.
"Its ok, Seth; it's just me. Sorry that I'm late my mother kept me." I said.
"That's fine come in Tyson." Seth said quietly opening the door wide enough to let me in. Every time I enter their house, I'm always amazed at how dark their house is, even when they have all the lights on. I followed Seth into the kitchen, where I saw Simon and Seth's grandpa, Jay, sitting at their dining room table, staring at a book with strange language.
I should explain more about Simon and Seth. Their parents died in car crash a few years ago. Ever since then they've been living with their grandfather, Jay. Simon has crutches on his legs because of the accident causing some nerve and muscle damage so he can't walk without the support of crutches. He was the only survivor. No one beside Jay understands why Seth wasn't there but he wasn't and we don't ask.
Their grandpa, Jay Coven, is around 56 years old, although he doesn't look it and he is very athletic. He is the only older man I know who can run three miles and barely break a sweat. Jay, is like an older Seth; very quiet and suspicious. He's very smart too; he was at the top of his class. Jay noticed me entering the kitchen and gave me a slight smile. Jay doesn't smile very often.
Simon, who was sitting next to Jay, also noticed me and jumped up from the table wanting to tackle me. Unfortunately for him, his chair he was sitting got caught in his crutches causing him to lose balance and fall on the floor. I couldn't help but laugh as Jay shook his head and help a hand out to Simon. Simon took Jay's hand and got back to his feet, with his face a little red. Before Simon did his falling act, Seth went to their room and grabbed our English project. He came down the stairs and saw Simon on the ground; he couldn't help but laugh. Simon heard Seth and turned to him to his glare to Seth. Then Simon went to chase Seth, but with Seth on the stairs and Simon on his crutches it was easier said then done. Simon ended up falling down again.
I shook my head at his clumsiness, after he got off the floor again; Simon just laughed it off and walked back to the table with Seth following him and me following Seth. For a few minutes on one said anything; Jay was probably the quietest; you could barely hear him shift in his seat. Simon and Seth were both looking at our project while I was stuck staring at our project while I was stuck staring at their handcrafted table, made by Jay. Finally the silence got to be too much so Simon spoke up.
"So, Tyson, how much trouble did you get into with your mom?" He asked.
"Not too much, she really just wanted to see if we knew what happened at lunch today." I explained.
"What happen at lunch?" Jay asked startling us. Jay doesn't usually talk very often so it shocked us that he spoke. I wasn't the only shocked though, Simon and Seth eyes were wide with shock.
"Why do you look so shocked?" Jay confused. When our eyes got wider as he spoke, he understood why we were so shocked; he smirked and said, "So am I allowed to talk by myself or do I have to tell you that I'm going to talk?"
I gulped before saying, "Sorry, Jay, it's just that you don't talk very often and..." I trailed off because I wasn't sure what to say now.
