It took Zvera Comprachicos eight minutes and twenty-four seconds to escape that sticky net trailing behind the drone and return to earth, with remnant strands fluttering as she fell. In local units the drone had travelled eighteen miles south.

She landed on but not in Coldwater Lake, which was now frozen over much thicker than it had been minutes before, the surface about as hard as cement. This slowed her return marginally.

As her body raced north her racing mind called out to Karet. No clear answer, a dial tone, not dead but disorientated, like he was drugged or knocked out.

Bruja's reply came in sharp and loud

(THE TORNGAT IS IN FULL CONTROL OF-)

and then all thoughts ceased.

Zvera ran hard for a few more miles, staring forward furiously at the buildings and trees racing by in the night. Then she looked up and saw the lights in the sky.

There were curtains of sky-fire overhead, aurora borealis. And not quite in the normal patterns.

"Did you soften up and let the wrong bitch get you?" Zvera hissed through clenched teeth, running faster. "No, you don't deserve that. I don't deserve that."
