"Yeah, yep we'll be there in like..." Dixie looked to Blake playing in the living room for a moment and then brought her attention back to Heidi on the phone, "In 30 minutes."
She hung up the phone and continued putting on her necklace, getting ready to meet her mother for lunch. Heidi was still working but her shift ended soon and they agreed they would just meet at the restaurant.
This lunch was more important than their others, Dixie was going to bring up finally letting Blake meet Marc. She had already been making small advancements, like speaking with Marc on the phone and sending him a picture here and there.
She figured they could start with a FaceTime call, and then maybe play at the park or some other place where Blake and Dixie both felt safe.
Dixie hated that she felt the need to be so cautious. She tried to tell herself that she was being too protective, as she often found herself being, but with each decision that came her gut kept telling her to be as safe as possible.
While it was still hard for her to invite her dad into Blake's life, the way she reacted to meeting Noah definitely helped convince her. Blake and he had hung out quite a few times since their first meeting and their relationship was only getting better.
Dixie finished getting ready and turned to Blake, "Blakey, sweetie, it's time to put away your toys." Blake pouted at her mother and whined, "But I having fun!"
Dixie shuffled over to the front door and looked out the window as she explained, "We're meeting Grandma baby so you have to-" But she stopped mid-sentence, as something outside caught her eye.
He was just wandering around on the sidewalk across from her house. Maybe it was just a coincidence? It had to be, she hadn't given him her address and she was certain no one else would.
But why would he be in this part of the town? It just didn't make my sense for him to be here for any reason other than to see Dixie. She froze at the sight of him before her maternal instincts began to kick in.
She immediately locked the door and hurried to get her phone while still trying her best not to freak Blake out. She hated that the sight of him got her so flustered, that her first reaction to seeing him was to lock her doors and protect Blake.
He was her father! Her mind should not be programmed to react in such a negative way at the sight of her father. Even though he wasn't really doing anything, he was just lingering around her property, her gut was once again freaked out by the possibilities.
She clicked her mother's name and the phone began to ring but, as Dixie expected, she didn't answer. She worryingly looked to Blake, who luckily didn't seem to notice anything and was instead just excited to get more playtime.
But Dixie's neck soon snapped to the door as she heard knocking. She didn't bother checking, she knew it was Marc, and checking would only risk him seeing her and knowing they were home.
Her immediate reaction was to call Noah. She didn't even think, she just ran over to hug Blake and prayed he would answer.
He picked up after 2 rings sounding as cheery as always. Usually, his voice would calm her but her mind was going too wild. "Hey! What's up?" She ignored him and spoke frantically, "Where are you?"
Noah shot up from his couch and completely changed his tone, "At home, why? What's wrong?" It didn't take a genius to notice the shake in her voice and fear behind her words.
"Can you come to my house? Quickly please?" She sounded like she was on the verge of tears and Noah was scared. But he didn't waste any time asking why, he had already grabbed his keys and was rushing out the door, "Be there soon."
