I never thought that this would snowball into something so disastrous. I mean I knew I started a war by hurting his feelings but not this way. I envisioned it as our first love quarrel that is stupid but cute. Well, my bad. I haven't thought about the repercussions. It was just a plain stupid move. Silly me, I thought to pout about a dumb thing will make me feel cute. Lesson learned. I would never pull that kind of thing again.
After telling Gary everything, we just sat in silence inside the cab. I wanted to break the tension so I asked him a silly question if he has a car. He laughed and said he does have a car it's just that his wife uses it. Their family car was being fixed since his wife had a car accident last month. Good thing she wasn't seriously injured. The truck was able to swerve and not hit the car directly, only the side of the car was damaged. the cab driver chimed in and said that he witnessed the said accident. Well, since we live in a small city you would really know what's going on and that event was listed to be the first road accident to happen this year. He talked about how the newly renovated roads were a great help in reducing traffic accidents, not to mention the discipline of the drivers. But the new roads, added the driver, making it much easier for the motorists to travel within the city. Come to think of it, I remember it was five years ago when our simple roads were renovated. There was proper lighting, reflectors and concrete walls built. The roads were also widened and made sure that there are bike lanes and pedestrian sidewalks. I also learned from my old landlord that cameras were installed and it is being watched 24/7 just in case an accident occurs, the medical team would be alerted right away.
I was nodding at what the driver was saying and I saw that Gary was smiling. He said to the driver,
"The mind behind the master plan is at the place where you will drop us off."
Both our jaws were dropped and we were mind blown.
"You mean the guy that is going to be King Kong?!" the driver cried. Gary and I laughed. He did listen to our conversation earlier and it's funny how his thoughts are being exaggerated.
"Yes, that's right," Gary answered while laughing.
Turned out, Daniel has always been aggressive when he wants to do something and when he came to our city, he thought of building a company to help. And there it was. But Gary told me that since their company was just starting, they were almost rejected for the city bidding. Good thing Daniel was so persuasive that they got the deal but of course for a lower price than those big construction companies. He did not mind for he really wanted to fix our city little by little. He really wanted to make our city world-class when it comes to industrialization.
I almost got teary-eyed and I heard the driver sniffed. "Wow, that's some story for someone who is not really from here." I did agree with him. He is really something. Thinking that he has the heart to make a change in our simple city will make you really think about your own dreams for your own society. I realized that I haven't been able to think in a bird's eye view. I have no direction in mind. I only work to feed myself and other people that need me, like in the orphanage. I am not really kind like what he always says. Perhaps he just thought that smiling always and being optimistic about life changes people. He is really the one who is kind, not me. He always thinks that he is wrong or that he always commits mistakes. He doesn't know how he is helping people in his own ways.
We finally arrived at their office and Gary asked for the driver to pull over to the largest building in the downtown area. Well, by city ordinance, the buildings downtown should only be five levels maximum. It is to make sure that people would see the city hall especially when it is illuminating at night. I always see this building and its company name but never guessed that It was theirs. We insisted that the driver take our fare because he was rejecting it at first stating that it would be his pleasure to provide service to the silent heroes of our town. We smiled and insisted saying that he can treat us fare if we ride in his taxi again. Finally, he agreed. Gary went on first and I was about to follow him when the driver whistled at me, "Just kiss him right away to stop him from being a King Kong!" I faced him and waved my arms and yelled, "I will! Thank you!" He also waved and I caught up with Gary inside the building. We are heading on the third floor. Gary starts to fidget and he looks serious again. I just look at him hoping that he would tell me something. When he noticed me staring at him, he just says, "I hope we are not too late. I should be meeting the client here and we're a minute late and..."
"They're both early birds," I finished his sentence. "Yes," he just muttered.
Ting! The elevator opens and we were greeted by their receptionist. Gary asked right away where Daniel is and she answered that he is in the conference room with the client. Gary walked fast as soon as he heard it. I followed him by running because he does walk with long strides. When we were near the door, he paused first, took a deep breath, and pulled both door handles.
I was still outside but I can already feel the tension inside. When I take a look inside, there I saw Daniel with his fingers interlaced and his chin resting into it while his client, my ex-boyfriend sat opposite next to him I cannot see his face but I know that something is up.
