Back at the mansion with our heroes the story continues. Well, technically, in the firing range beneath the mansion.
"You ok?" Cora asks looking down at Adam, whose panting on the floor, drenched in sweat.
"I think we should stop for today. Any more and you'll probably collapse." Cora adds sitting down next to him.
For the past three days, she's been helping him get over main weakness. Gunfire. If Eden were to attack again, they would need him to be able to stay calm during a firefight.
"You've definitely made progress. Just two day ago you would pass out the moment you even saw a gun. But now you can remain calm through an entire mag. Even though it clearly does still put a large amount of strain on you." She comments glancing down at him.
She can't help but wonder what drives him. Any normal person would still lose it if they had gone through what he has. So how is he able to progress so quickly.
Without realising she voices her thoughts.
"Because...." He says before briefly pausing. "Protecting my family, is the only dream I have. And I will give everything for that dream."
Upon hearing his words Cora feels something tug in her heart.
"You silly boy. We're the ones who have to protect you." She says leaning down and kissing him.
She remembers when they met, she had felt sorry for him. Being the last of his kind and all. But as she watched him grow up something inside her changed. She started to see him as a little brother she needed to protect.
That was until she went to visit him on his sixteenth birthday.
You see, something had happened to his body ever since he was thirteen.
And yes, while puberty was part of it there was also something else.
Because he was the last of his kind as well as a genetic experiment his body adapted and evolved so that he would be able to reproduce even with Animas.
For starters his body matured at an astonishing rate, meaning that he was fully developed at the age of sixteen. And while he isn't as tall as Animas he would be considered a tall man among humans.
Added to that, his body's scent changed.
He now didn't smell like any human. He now had the scent of an Alpha Male of the highest calibre.
Cora was the first woman to be drawn to this scent. While most females would be putt off or even scared by it, she was attracted to it.
Soul scent. It's when an Anima's very soul is drawn in by someone's scent. It's a more primal version of what humans called finding your soulmate. It also allows for multiple women to fall in love with one man. Or vice versa. (Don't know if I already explained this so yeah, here you go.)
"You know, it's almost full moon." Cora whispers seductively into his ear.
All of a sudden his face turns red. Anima's have an increased sex drive on full moons. This usually means that if someone wants to preserve their chastity they need to be seperated from their mate for the entire night. And Adam has a few of those.
"I heard about the marriage arrangements. I already know your looking into a way to stop it. I also know that you're aware that there is only a single way." Cora comments sitting back up.
"Yeah. And it's not a way I'm planning on exploiting." Adam replies, sitting upright.
"Would you do it if they gave their consent?" She asks.
When he doesn't reply she asks a different question.
"Would you do it if it's what they wanted?"
After thinking about it Adam replies, "Only if it's what they really wanted."
All of a sudden Adam's phone makes a PING sound.
Looking at it he sees that it's a message from Francoise.
It read: Need to meet. Tell no one.
Attached to it is a location not to far from them.
"I need to go." Adam says quickly standing up.
"Oh, where are you going?" Cora asks, surprised.
"I promised a classmate I'd help him with his homework." Adam lies before rushing off.
On his way out he takes the backdoor so as to avoid everyone else.
Once outside he jogs to the road while calling a cab.
Luckily for him they already have one in the area so he doesn't wait long.
To his relief he finds that his wallet is already in his pocket so he doesn't need to run back inside to get it.
Meanwhile inside Cora gets a call from an unknown number.
"Hello?" Cora answers.
"Thank god!" She hears Francois say on the other end.
"Listen. Don't let Adam leave the school grounds. My sources say that...." All of a sudden he's cut off.
Without hesitation Cora runs back upstairs.
"Charles!" She shouts out once she's in the main hall.
"Yes my lady?" An old Yorkshire terrier looking man in a suit that butlers in movies where says from behind her.
"We need to find Adam. Now!" Cora says.
When Charles doesn't say anything she turns around and finds that he's already gone. Outside she finds one of her supercars. And inside it on the passenger side is Irina. Charles is in front of the car on a motorcycle. She recognises it as the one she had in her garage. It's an experimental model that's designed for racing.
Getting into the car she sees that it's GPS is set to Adam's phone.
And with that the three of them drive off hoping they're not too late.
Adam on the other hand is hoping he's not too early.
The cab dropped him off in an abandoned lot next to a rundown hospital building. Looking at the abandoned building sends chills down his spine.
"I'm glad you showed." Someone familiar says behind him.
Turning around he sees Ben standing there wearing a hoody.
"Ben?!" Adam exclaims surprised.
"It's actually Michael." Ben replies.
"What's going on here?" Adam asks feeling worried.
"I'm here on an op for Eden." Michael says.
He can tell by Adam's expression that he's not just shocked but also conflicted.
"Don't worry I'm not here for you. I'm here to talk to a VIP who's staying in a hotel three blocks from here." Michael explains hoping that it helps Adam calm down.
"What do you want?" Adam asks, his voices sounding strained.
"I want to warn you. The person you've been talking to isn't Francoise. It's Lilith using a voice changer." Michael says.
Without another word Michael turns around and starts walking away.
Once Michael is a few feet away Adam asks him why he warned him.
After a brief moment of silence Michael replies: "Because you're my friend."
And with that Michael is gone.
Not long after Cora arrives and finds Adam sitting down starring at the ground.
Only once they're on their way home would Adam tell her the whole story.
