"Hiya!!" Kyayorin yells at Maruko across the schoolyard, "Good morning!"
Maruko spins around, surprised upon hearing Kyayorin, "U-uh... hi, good morning Kyayorin-san," he says, a little embarrassed.
They have gotten to know each other, and Kyayorin has kind of forced him to become her friend.
He still doesn't know why she's so persistent on becoming friends with him, but it's not like he minds it.
There's this feeling he gets when he's near Kyayorin.
He doesn't know what it is exactly, but it feels nice.
It feels pleasant.
It makes him feel happy.
At least, as happy as he could be.
"How are you doing?" Kyayorin asks as she walks next to him towards the entrance of the school.
"I- I'm fine," he replies, looking down at his shoes.
It wasn't a lie, he's feeling much better than before.
Maruko thinks of something to say to Kyayorin, as they continue approaching the entrance.
"Yooo Kyayorinnnn!" Haarrii shouts as she sprints towards them. Over the last couple of days, Kyayorin has also become friends with Haarrii.
It is simply impossible for them to not become friends.
"Have you seen the martial arts tournament that I told you about yesterday?" Haarrii asks Kyayorin as they chat away.
"No, I was busy baking cookies all afternoon," Kyayorin replies, laughing.
"The entire afternoon?" Haarrii asks, surprised. "Were you making them for someone?" she adds, giving Kyayorin a look.
"Nahh, I ate them all right away,"
Maruko follows behind them as they continue to chat. He smiles a little, thinking about the drawing he's been working on.
It's a special work, it's meant for-
"You're smiling!" Haarrii exclaims as she turned around. "Are you feeling ill?? You are actually smiling!"
"I- uh- I'm feeling fine," he says, putting his hands up submissively.
Haarrii smiles, a wide genuine smile. Her best friend has finally smiled, in who knows how long!
"So, what's with the changes? Has something good happened?" Haarrii asks, walking beside Maruko.
"Uh, I guess you could say that," he replies, continuing to smile.
Haarrii pauses. "Is it because of a girl?"
Maruko stopped walking and started to think. "I- I don't know...,"
Haarrii and Kyayorin both sneer: "Tell us who it is,"
"I- I- uhhh," Maruko says as he doesn't know what to say.
Luckily, one of his other friends comes over and puts an arm around his shoulder. "Hey man! How have you been? It's been so long!" Mano says, grinning widely.
"I- have been alright,"
"That's cool! Come on let's go!", he says, walking Maruko away from the girls.
They enter the school and walk through the hallway, chatting about random things. Mano Yoshida is an old friend that used to play in the same football club as Maruko. They used to be really close, but lost touch as Mano quit the club.
He's somewhat of a nerd, spending his time studying chess. It's his dream to one day become a Grandmaster, perhaps be as good as Cagnus Marlsen or Nikaru Hakamura.
"So...," Mano finally says as they stop walking, "Since I saved you from them, you have to tell me what's up?"
"Eh?" Maruko replies, "Not much, life's just the same,"
Mano gives him a suspicious look, "You know, a man doesn't change that quickly, I've noticed you looking more happy each day,"
"Is that so?" Maruko asks.
Is it really true that he's been looking happier?
"Well, I wouldn't say fully happy happy, but I can see that you are feeling better," Mano adds, "I mean, you don't have to tell me, I already know what's going on,"
Maruko leans on the wall in silence, waiting for Mano to finish his sentence.
"So, is it Haarrii? Or the new girl?"
"Huh-? What are you talking about?" Maruko asks, surprised.
Mano laughs loudly, "You can't hide that look on your face Maruko. A wise man once told me: "The only thing that can save someone from death is finding love in the dark","
Maruko laughs a little as well, "And who was this wise man?"
"Me," Mano grins, "And I should get going, your gang is back,"
Mano walks away as Haarri and Kyayorin catch up to Maruko. "Oi! How dare you take him away from us!"
Maruko looks at them as they walk towards him.
Is it true? What Mano said?
Is that what he's feeling?
Maruko looks at Kyayorin's smiling face, as she walks toward him.
It's as if she was sent to him by some supernatural forces.
