AVA
I walked up the stairs of my apartment, just getting back from working at my local Police Department to give aid on a case. I walk holding my briefcase and purse up the stairs until I reach my door. I sigh loudly, " BABEEEE!" as I realize the door is locked. I wait a moment but don't hear him coming to open the door. I tiredly look around in my purse until I find the front door key.
Opening the door I put my stuff down and calls his name, " Jake?!?" No answer but as I walk I start to hear music and commotion.
"Hello?!" I raise my voice in confusion. I reach for the handle of my bedroom door. The music cuts and a force stops the door from opening. "NO." screams Jake. "DON'T COME IN!" I pound on the door not understanding.
"I'm changing babe just give me a minute." Jake says. I push on the door, "Open this door right now." I'm pushing as hard as I could and Jake, knowing he couldn't hide this secret, let me in.
I whip open the door to not only see my boyfriend cheating but him cheating with my brother. "Oh my god." I back away with tears in my eyes.
2 WEEKS LATER
I board my plane to New York feeling sad leaving behind my family but knowing there's no other option. After I caught my boyfriend cheating I decided to look for better positions with my bachelors in criminology. Within a few days I was offered a starting 90k salory to join an investigation team as a profiler.
I spent my whole life watching crime shows and solving my own investigations aswell. I knew that was the career for me by 15.
When I was offered a dream position, I knew this was the perfect excuse to leave town. I spent the past week preparing and distracting herself from the painfully obvious truth.
I was heartbroken.
FEW HOURS LATER
I pull up to the front of my hotel. I didn't have enough time to find a place to live so I would have to stay at a hotel for awhile. Thankfully I had money saved in order for me to afford this expense.
I finally make it to my room and arrange my clothes. "Got to at least make it comfortable in here." as I pull out a photo of my friends from high school.
I pull out my laptop and opens my email, searching for information on my new job that I starts in two days.
I put my work away and grab my purse. "I might aswell go out and adventure the town."
I step out the hotel and search for a local coffee shop. "Camps Coffee." I read outloud, "I have nothing else to do, might as well get something."
I walk since it's only 5 minutes from my hotel. When I arrive I walk to the counter. "Hello, what can I get for you today?" A younger girl asks. I look up and smile, "Uhh can I just get a hot coffee?" I ask politely.
I pay and grab a booth in the back of the shop. For an hour I look out the window watching people walk past me. I imagine the life they live.
FIVE MONTHS AGO
"Why can't you just apply to more places?" I scream at Jake. I feel helpless. Jake hasn't worked in 3 months. I pick up as many shifts as I can to make up for his side of the bills.
He stands up from the couch and shakes his head, " You don't get to tell me what to do. I have been trying to find something."
I go to the counter and grab the mail, "Then what is this? This is your portion of the bills I have to pay again. Money I don't have Jake." I start to cry feeling like I'm not getting anywhere with him.
CURRENT DAY
I snap out of it, that was a hard time. Jake was my best friend before we even dated. Everyone knew we would end up dating and as soon as junior year hit we decided to try it out. This year would've marked 7 years together.
"Hi girl, do you need a refill?" the younger girl from earlier asks. I look into my cup noticing it's nearly empty, "Umm I was actually going to look around some more so I'm okay." I smile.
The girl lightens up, "Oh my god, are you visiting?" as she sits in the booth. I hope she doesn't get fired for talking to me. She notices my unease, "Oh I'm sorry girl. I just moved here a few months ago with my family, this is our shop."
It was my first day and I was already making friends. "I just moved here, I was offered a deal I couldn't pass up." I share with her.
"Well my name is Ayla, I'd be more than happy to show you around. I promise I won't kidnap you." She giggles.
"Well Ayla aren't you just a ball of happiness. I'm Ava, I'd love to see what New York has to offer." I smile again, still having my guard up.
For the next hour her and I talked about our life.
"He did what?" she says with her mouth wide open. I look at her with a resting face knowing I can't let my emotions out. "Yeah, I haven't spoke to either of them."
"Well it looks like you're in need for a girls night soon." I laugh and nod. Pulling out a napkin from a holder and grabbing a pen from my purse I write down my number and give it to her.
I say goodbye to Ayla, promising I will stay in contact. On my way to the hotel I feel relieved that I made a friend, I don't want to be alone in such a big city.
For the rest of the night I prepare more for work while also texting Ayla about our girls night we have planned.
Ayla : We are going out to the club and you can't say no.
Me : I have no clothes for that girl.
Ayla : Good thing your favorite person in the whole world has a massive closet full of clothes begging to be worn.
She sends me her address and tells me to be at her house by 5 pm the next day.
