chapter twelve

"Y/N!!! Y/N!!!"

I ran out of the tent to see Yuu and Shinoa carrying Corporal Nagai on a gurney. "Oh my God, Nagai! Is he okay? Are you two okay?" My heart raced at the sight of them. I knew they'd be out there fighting with the enemy but I had hoped that nothing like this would've happened.

"Where are the others?" I asked as it finally dawned on me that there were only two of them.

"The road collapsed and we got separated by the debris. We're meeting them back at the western defensive border." Shinoa explained.

"That's pretty far! You guys should go, my team and I can handle this."

"No," Shinoa said. "We shouldn't leave until we know how serious Nagai's condition is." I had to admit, that was a very mature and responsible thing to say.

"He's gonna be okay, right?" Yuu looked from me to Nagai and back again. "Yes, he'll be fine. We need to start an IV." We hauled him into the tent and my team immediately got to work. "Wait out here for a couple of minutes."

I walked out of the tent, looking around for Shinoa and Yuu. "Y/N!" I looked to my right and saw them jump out of their chairs to get to me. "Is he okay!?"

"He's conscious. Give him a day or two and he'll be back on his feet."

They both sighed in relief and they looked visibly more relaxed. "Let's go meet up with the others." Yuu stated with a grip on his holster. "You're both doing great." I smiled.

"Bye Y/N!!"

Screams and smoke started to fill the air. So many of our troops had fallen, the medical tents bursting at the seams. "What the hell is that?" I heard someone say. "Run!! Run!!" I ran outside to see a beacon of light, humans and vampires both running in the opposite direction as fast as they could. I knew in my bones that it was related to the Shinoa Squad, it had to be.

"Kuzihito!" I called out to my second in command, her arms full of gauze and rubbing alcohol. "Stay here, you're in charge. I have to see what's going on!" As I was running I grabbed my sword and some enhancing pills.

"Y/N, WHAT WILL GUREN SAY?!" Kuzihtio cried after me. I rolled my eyes and continued on my way, "Tell him to kiss my ass!"

"YUU!!" Shinoa shrieked as I held her tight in my arms. Dark black wings spread from his back, his eyes black with a singular ring of green in the center. I couldn't pull my eyes away from the being that overtook Yuu's body. "The King of Salt..." Guren muttered next to me, his arm holding his wound shut.

"WHAT THE FUCK?!" I yelled, punching him in the thigh. "Did you know about this?!" I looked around at everyone in the Shinoa Squad but all I was met with was blank faces. Their eyes seemed to widen in shock and horror at the state of their friend.

"He has to snap out of it!" Kimizuki shouted at me. I'd never seen anything like this, I was completely unprepared for this situation. In all my years of training, never have I seen any of the students' cursed gear go berserk like this.

"YUU!!" Another voice called, this time it was a vampire boy. His pale complexion and bright red eyes gave him away. What in the world...?

"It's Mika!" Shinoa explained, "He's one of Yuu's friends." I stared at her with my mouth agape, "Yuu has a vampire friend?!" Shinoa shook her head at me, "No he's a good guy, I don't have time to explain!" With that, she lept up and ran straight for Yuu.

"Shinoa, come back!" Yocihi tried to stop her, but she was too fast. She tackled him in a bear hug and started speaking into his ear.

Then,

He collapsed.

~*~*~*~ FIVE DAYS LATER ~*~*~*~

I opened the door to the laboratory to find Guren sitting at a counter flipping through paperwork. "Who told you you could come down here?" He didn't look at me as he spoke. I rolled my eyes and took a few steps closer. "I'm a Major General, don't act as if I don't have clearance to be down here."

He glanced my way before getting out of his seat and coming towards me, our bodies only a foot apart. "Whatever you want to know is classified information." I took a step closer, closing the gap between us, "Who says I want to know anything?" He scoffed and turned around to plop back down in his seat.

"You always want something, you're selfish like that." He stated, still not looking at me, his eyes focused on the paperwork. I sighed, I couldn't keep playing these games with him. "Are we ever going to talk about it?"

"I already told you, any information you want is classified-"

"NOT THAT GUREN!" I shouted. Now he was looking at me. My face felt hot and the idea of Yuu still unconscious in the hospital made me queasy. "What is wrong with you?! You give Yuu some special pills, send top-secret letters, and can't even admit to yourself that we had sex!!" My throat was coarse, my eyes were watering.

It was quiet for a moment.

"Do you expect an apology? I'm doing everything I can to win this war, and if you don't like how I'm running things maybe you should leave." His eyes were cold, I felt so small compared to him.

Trying to stand my ground, "I don't want to be your second in command anymore. I can't stand by as you hurt those kids!" I could feel my hands shaking. Guren looked at me once again, this time with a satisfied smile. "Finally. No more dead weight." He spat.

My heart broke again, but this time I wasn't going to cry or cause a scene in the mess hall. Instead, I walked back to the door and glared at him with all I could muster.

"Don't come crawling back to me when you burn yourself into the ground."
