Boring becomes blackmail

Midsummer's day had never been more dull. The flu had gone round early this year and shops were closing rapidly due to the workers falling like flies against this invisible enemy. The clouds were thick and it had already rained twice in the past three hours which was not helping to lift Kiera's mood. She was sick with boredom watching her mother rush around the house with pins in her mouth and fistsulls of ribbon and spare fabrik from the midsummer dresses that she had made.

"Cathy won't be coming with us to the lake," she said her voice sounding muffled as she rushed into the laundry room with an iron. Kiera rolled her eyes. Cathy was the anxious little woman from across the street who never stopped worrying about anything. This year the problem was that she hadn't been able to buy a new dress for midsummer because the shop that she usually went to had closed rather suddenly. She was so worried about what the rest of the town would think of her if she wore the same dress as last year that she had decided it would be better to fake illness and stay home. Kieras mother had tried to persuade her that nobody would even notice what she wore today let alone remember last year's outfit but Cathy had taken this as an insult instead of a comfort.

10 weeks of summer boredom, three of which were complete and Kiera didn't know what to do with herself. She was bored out of her mind and the thought of another seven weeks filled with repetitive nothingness made her question the point of holidays. Even school was better than this!

"Stand up, I need to make sure your dress is still hanging right," Kiera's mother stood back to admire her craftsmanship with pleasure. "Perfect!" She said and quickly left the room again, trailing threads of yellow, white and blue.

Kiera sat down and huffed a sigh. The dress was too long, she just knew she would step on it and there was no way out of dancing. Horrible Tradition! Why did they have to sing about little frogs and crying boys and cars crashing into ditches?

"Kiera!" The voice of a child attempting to whisper but not quite succeeding startled her out of her dismal thoughts.

"What is it Timmy?" She asked her little brother with an air of superior knowledge.

"I need you to help me make these daisies into a bracelet for Georgie," he said placing them on the kitchen table before her.

Kiera sighed and started threading them together. "Is she coming to the lake?" She asked hoping that for once something might go right with her day.

"Yes she is and I'm going to give her that bracelet," Timothy said pointing at the flowers.

Kiera couldn't even be bothered to roll her eyes in annoyance. Georgie, only called that by her boyfriend Timothy, was otherwise called Georgina. They were the same young age of 7 and Kiera couldn't understand for the life of her why her baby brother had a girlfriend in the first place let alone choosing a girl like Georgina. If they get married, Kiera thought sullenly, i'm going to move to the other side of the world. The clouds which had seemed so dark lightened in her mind at the thought of sandy beaches and golden sunshine. There see, you can be optimistic, kiera thought to herself almost smiling at the dolphins and palm trees.

"Are you done yet?" Timothy said with a slight wine.

Kiera strolled over the muddy grass by the lake and watched idly as the people around her chatted, some moving towards a long horizontal pole to help fasten the flowers to it. Most of the women and children wore flower wreaths in their hair including Kiera. Easy to spot as always was little Georgina with a bright pink princess dress and curly blond hair. She stood out a mile. Instead of a wreath she wore a crown and although she let Timothy slip the ring of daisies onto her wrist, Kiera watched as she quickly let it fall off. Stubborn as a mule but as pretty and sweet as the princess she was dressed as. Kiera would never fall for her sly ways like all the other adults did, thankfully she was only sixteen and that let her see what others older than her missed, as soon as the adults backs were turned Georgie used any means (usually involving bullying) to get what she wanted.

Kiera turned away from the little imp now simpering at her baby brother and surveyed the other people present. She recognised most of them even though the crowd was large. Midsummer was a big celebration that everyone made the most of in her town. Her 11 year old brother was trying out the drums that had been set up to play along the violins and pianos, this year there was even a harp. He was quickly shooed away and went to play with his mates, cap turned backwards as befitted a cool kid of his age. She gazed at the crowd again recognizing neighbors, classmates, teachers, friend's parents, shop owners and other vague relations. In Kieras town everyone was related to everyone in some distant way. The townspeople used terms such as second and third cousins abundantly. This simply meant that they had met at a family party which of course meant that they were related.

The wreath flower slipped into her face and kiera sneezed from the pollen. Then she looked up and saw her mother laughing while a beaming man whom she vaguely recognised handed her a drink. That made her gag in surprise. Her mother never had time for anything, let alone men! Well that just does it, Kiera thought grumpily, turning her back on the pair. At the other end of the lawn she saw something that lifted her spirits slightly. Pink, fluffy, and absurdly cute, little Georgina was having a fit. Rather than through tantrums like most other children do when they dont get their own way Georgina seemed to have decided that when smiles, then tears had both failed it was time to take whatever she wanted by brute force. She was standing in all her glory holding on to one end of a microphone playing a vicious game of tug of war with the lead singer holding on to the other end. The singer, a stout black woman with deep red lipstick, had the ugliest frown on her face. Teeth clenched and eyes wide she was battling the little seven year old with vigor. As Kiera watched Georgina seemed to lose ground but then she had sunk her teeth into the singer's arm and pulled the microphone out free of the woman's grip. The singer howled in agony and Georginas parents came running just as Georgina burst into tears. Maybe there is still hope for the world, Kiera thought as she watched the singer gesticulate wildly while georginas mother hugged her and her father yelled. Maybe it was time to take matters into her own hands like Georgina and fix the never ending boredom. Starting the moment she got home...

Kiera finished the heading of her Website and admired her work. More for a joke and something to do than anything else she wasn't expecting anyone to even see it. She carefully set up a box connected to her email where people could anonymously write what they needed, who their target was and what they wanted to use as blackmail. Last she added a price for her work: 100kr per note/email/job. Perfect. She went to bed feeling pleased with herself.
