TWO || scary people

"Maya!" Percy heard one of the girls nudge the other in concern. The other girl—shorter one—stared at him in shock, he stared back at her.

Her eyes were a shade of ocean green he'd seen in the mirror before, and with her hair only a shade lighter to his own, it was like looking at a mirror to see

"Well that was a lovely trip," the old lady June said, "Thank you Percy Jackson, for bringing me to camp."

The taller girl made a choking sound, "Percy... Jackson?"

She sounded as though she recognised his name. He focused on her, hoping to see a familiar face.

She was obviously a leader, she wore a regal purple cloak over her armour. Her chest was decorated with medals. She must have been Percy's age, with dark piercing eyes and long black hair. Percy didn't recognize her, but the girl stared at him as if she'd seen him in her nightmares.

The shorter girl held the taller one's—purple cloak—hand, it seemed to be for both of their comfort with the look on their faces.

The shorter girl looked familiar. It was weird rather than anything; she was familiar but at the same time she seemed like a stranger to him, however, he still had a naggy feeling in his gut that told him to go give her a hug, but he shook it off.

She was still a stranger to him, at least right now and he didn't think anyone would appreciate it.

Other than that, she seemed to be a leader too. She held her head up high and other than her grip on the girl with the purple cloak's hand, her face remained stone cold and blank. Her eyes told another story, one of shock and grief.

It couldn't be anything important, right? He shook it off.

June laughed with delight, "Oh yes, you'll have such fun together."

Then, just because the day hadn't been weird enough already, the old lady began to glow and change form. She grew until she was a seven foot tall goddess in a blue dress, with a cloak that looked like goat's skin over her shoulders. Her face was stern and stately. In her hand was a staff topped with a lotus flower.

If it was possible for the campers to look even more stunned, they did. The girl with the purple coat knelt, tugging the shorter girl to as well when she didn't move. Reluctantly, she bowed down later. She seemed to still be in shock.

Hazel was the first to speak, "Juno."

She, along with Frank, fell to their knees, leaving Percy the only one standing. (Aside from the short girl who wasn't completely on her knees but still bowing in respect, but he didn't know if that counted or not). He knew he should probably kneel too but after carrying her so far, he didn't feel like showing her much respect.

"Juno, huh?" he said, "if i passed your test, can i have my memories and life back?" 'and know why the short girl looks so much like me, it's seriously creepy now.'

The goddess smiled and Percy wondered if she heard what he'd thought. "In time Percy Jackson, if you succeed here at camp. You've done well today, which is a good start. Perhaps there's still hope for you."

She turned to the other kids, "Romans," she then turned to the short girl specifically, "Daughter of Neptune. I present to you your brother, the son of Neptune," she then turned back to everyone else. "For months, he has been slumbering, but now he is awake. His fate is in your hands. The feast of fortune comes quickly, and death must be unleashed if you are to stand any hope in battle," before turning back to the short girl, and Percy wondered if her neck hurt from turning so much, "take care of your older brother Maya Jackson. Do not fail me."

Juno then shimmered and disappeared, leaving the short girl—Maya—confused, although she still managed to mask it with her cold face in a millisecond again.

The name... it still sounded similar, as though it was a dimming yell just in the back of his brain, a concept Percy couldn't grasp.

'Who is she to me?'

'Your sister dumbass' his subconscious replied. Percy knew she was his sister, because Juno had mentioned her to be the daughter of Neptune, who, if was his father, was hers too and thus they were related but he remembered her from somewhere else too, he just didn't know where.

Percy looked at Frank and Hazel for some kind of explanation, but they seemed just as confused as he was. Frank was holding two clay flasks with cork stoppers, like potions, in one hand each, but he saw Frank slip it into his pockets. Frank gave him a look that said, 'we'll talk about this later'

The two girls stepped forward, side by side. The girl in the purple cloak examined Percy and he couldn't shake off the feeling that she wanted to run him through with her dagger.

"So," she coldly said, "a son of Neptune who comes to us with the blessing of Juno."

Maya elbowed her slightly, it was almost unnoticeable, but it didn't slip him.

"Look," Percy responded, "my memory is a little fuzzy right now. Um, it's gone actually, do I know either of you?"

The girl hesitated, but Maya waited for her to go first anyway. "I am Reyna, the praetor of the Twelfth legion. And... no, I don't know you."

That last part was a lie, Percy could tell it from her eyes, and by the looks of it so could Maya, but he also understood that if he argued with either of them, here in front of their soldiers, she wouldn't appreciate it.

"Hazel, bring him inside," said Reyna, "Maya and I will question him at the principa." The way Reyna said it made him wonder if Maya was her right hand, or even her equal here. By the looks of it they did everything together, "Then we'll send him to Octavian." Percy saw Maya roll her eyes the slightest at that name, to which Reyna responded, "We must consult the Auguries before we decide what to do with him."

"What do you mean," He asked, "'decide what to do with' me?"

Reyna's hand tightened on the dagger after Maya sent her a warning look. Obviously Reyna wasn't used to disagreeing with Maya, as she did now, or having her orders questioned.

Before Reyna could say anything, Maya answered, speaking for the first time since he'd seen her. "Before we have anyone at camp, we usually interrogate them to know their intentions. Unless you lie there, you'll be okay."

Percy blinked twice, but he couldn't focus, for him, it seemed like his mind floated back a couple years, maybe even more at hearing her voice.

"You can't catch me Maya!"

"Of course I can! Now run"

"Maya, no- get off my back!"

Percy blinked back to the present to Reyna speaking. "We also read the Auguries. Juno said your fate is in our hands. We have to know whether the goddess has brought us a new recruit..." she studied him again as though she found that a little doubtful. "or," she said more hopefully, "if she brought us an enemy to kill."

"Reyna." Maya called to her quietly, almost a whisper but her tone was stern and steady, "you will not touch my—" she hesitated for a moment before she seemed to steady again, "my brother. You will not hurt him in any way unless his actions prove otherwise. Are we clear?"

Her tone had a dangerous edge to it which scared him shitless. Reyna handled it better than he would have and walked away, but that wasn't enough to get rid of Maya apparently, who walked behind her as she always did.

Percy sighed, "well then."
