All through the week Charlotte kept receiving various cryptic messages from Tom. She couldn't sleep without Lauren and she refused to leave anyone's side. To say Lauren was worried was a huge understatement, same for everyone else. Jacob and Mahogany didn't even risk looking at Charlotte since they were terrified that Lauren would yell at them. Lauren had gotten Ivy's number and texted the girl to see if Charlotte had said anything. But she stated that since that day Charlotte had barely replied to her texts and hadn't answered her phone at all. She was at a dead end.
Charlotte locked her phone. She had received another threat, this time it was worse.
From unknown: Not long now until you're mine again.
She had to tell someone, so she walked out to the front of the bus to find Lauren reading. "Laur..." Charlotte spoke carefully as she entered. Lauren looked up and immediately threw her book to the side. "What's wrong? Are you okay?" Lauren asked, hoping that Charlotte wasn't going to have her 50th panic attack this week.
Charlotte shook her head. "I need to tell you something." She breathed. Lauren nodded and allowed Charlotte to lead her to the back of the bus where everyone has been sleeping. Lauren started to develop a bad feeling in her gut. Something was up and she had a feeling that whatever Charlotte was about to tell her would shed light on her sudden change.
And she was right.
Charlotte watched Lauren sit down before reverting her gaze to the floor. "Charlotte baby what's happening?" Lauren asked worriedly, as she went to take Charlotte's small hands. Charlotte moved them away and locked eyes with Lauren. "You know when I was with Mahogany and Jake?" Charlotte barely spoke above a whisper. Her voice was unused and sore from where she would wake up screaming due to her nightmares.
"Yeah, what happened?" Lauren asked. Charlotte took a deep breath in attempt to stop her lip from quivering, but it didn't work, and tears soon began pouring from her face. "Charlotte..." Lauren spoke sadly as she stood up and hugged the younger girl tightly. "You can tell me, I promise." Lauren whispered comfortingly.
So Charlotte told her. And Lauren broke down.
"Show me the texts." Lauren asked. Charlotte handed her her phone and Lauren shakily unlocked it and read through the dozens of messages from Tom. A sob escaped her lips as she scrolled through them. "They aren't going to get you I swear okay?" Lauren stated. Charlotte nodded weakly, wishing that she could believe Lauren, but she couldn't. Actions spoke louder than a few words of uncertain protection, because not even Lauren seemed so sure.
"I have to tell people you know that right?" Lauren whispered. Charlotte nodded sadly. "I do."
Lauren sighed. "I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure these people get locked away okay? They won't take you Charlotte, I promise."
The rest of the afternoon to Charlotte was a large blurt of emotions and arguments. Everyone had turned on Mahogany and Jacob, and the two were unsure of what to do or say, because they couldn't do or say anything that would change this, even though Big Rob said it wasn't their fault, it sure did feel like it to everyone.
Eventually, at some point, three Detectives showed up.
"Hi, I'm detective Morris, this is Officer Morgan and Officer Carling." The oldest, more authoritative looking man of the group spoke. Lauren shook their hands and thanked them for coming as best as she could with Charlotte latched onto her.
"Charlotte, why don't you go with Camz to watch a movie okay?" Lauren asked. Camila stood up and took Charlotte and went to the back room with the other girls to watch Nemo.
"When did Charlotte start receiving these threats?" Detective Morris asked as he and the two others sat opposite Lauren and Mr and Mrs' Jauregui and Big Rob. "Eight days ago." Lauren sniffed, leaning into her mother as she comforted her.
"We can trace the texts, but it will more than likely be sent from a burn phone. We can give her protection and wait for them to show up again. We can do much other than that, and try and find Tom in our records." Officer Morgan spoke sadly. Lauren sighed and nodded. "I understand."
"We'll get one of our officers to be with Charlotte at all time."
"Charlotte won't want a stranger with her. Big Rob will watch over her." Lauren spoke quickly. "We understand." Officer Carling spoke softly, as she leant forward, but one of our officers need to be with Charlotte as well as Rob. Charlotte can decide who, we want her to live as normally and as comfortably she could during this." She spoke. Lauren sighed and nodded. "I'll go get her." Lauren sighed as she headed to the back of the bus to find Charlotte curled up in Camila's lap.
"Charlotte, I need you to come with me for a few minutes, okay?" Charlotte nodded and followed Lauren to the front of the bus.
She spoke to the officers for a while, telling them everything that had happened when she ran into Tom that day. They wrote things down and Office Morgan left to go tell everyone else back at the station.
"Charlotte, we are going to have on of our officers be with you at all time okay?" Detective Morris spoke softly. "You can meet them and choose who you want to stay with you okay? We just need you as safe as possible until we catch Tom okay?" Charlotte carefully as she played with Lauren's fingers.
"Can you stay?" She asked Officer Carling. She looked at Morris who nodded at Carling. "Of course I can."
