I linger in the back of the stands, looking like a fresh fish out of water. On top of me having no idea what I'm looking at, I also had no idea that every person here would be wearing the same colors.
I'm sticking out just like a sore thumb, which is exactly what I was afraid of.
What I have been noticing, however, is the way the crowd reacts to everything Marcus does. Every time he throws the ball to someone, everyone goes crazy. I want to cheer for him as well, but I'm far too uncomfortable to do so. I keep my distance from the rest of the school by sitting in the very last row. I smile as I watch him have his moment. I can't believe my boyfriend is the quarterback of an undefeated team.
I love him.
I watch the game confusedly and pay close attention when the crowd cheers. I make mental notes of the plays that get the most positive feedback. I secretly try to learn about football for the sake of my new relationship. We're winning by 21 points. I think Marcus's undefeated title is safe.
"We're going to the championship with a perfect record!" The commentator shouts, causing the crowd to go wild. I jump up from my seat when everyone else does. The spectators chat happily as I slide past pupil after pupil. I decide to head towards the field to congratulate my boyfriend on a great game.
"Excuse me! Excuse- pardon me!" I exclaim until I reach the bottom of the bleachers. I see a sea of uniformed players and at first, I can't tell which athlete is Marcus. I move closer to the team until I spot Tori and the cheerleaders mingling with the guys. I stop in my tracks and fold my arms once Marcus comes into view.
She's over there with my man!
I keep my distance but watch their interaction closely. Their conversation appears to be a negative one. They seem to be having some sort of argument. She tries to grab his arm, but he snatches away from her. She gets upset and storms off. I let out a huge sigh of relief before proceeding towards him. He finally sees my face and waves.
"There's my girl," Marcus says with a smile. I blush as I make it over to him.
"Hey! Great game. Can't act like I know what was going on exactly, but I see that we won." He laughs at my ignorance.
"Yeah... we won, and we're going to the 'ship!" He exclaims happily. I smile as he takes me in his arms and pecks me quickly. His teammates rush over and grab him.
"Baby, I'll call you later!" He screams while the players drag him away. I smile like a proud girlfriend and wave bye to him. I watch him until he disappears from my sight. I turn around to head for the exit. I'm approaching the gate when Tori and a few of her cheerleading sidekicks step in my path.
"So... you're Marcus's new girlfriend, huh?" She spits out distastefully. I make an alarmed face.
I'm so not ready for this confrontation yet!
"Uhh..." I mutter, not knowing what to say. My head goes down like it usually does whenever Tori is around. I'm so nervous right now, I could vomit. The cheerleaders look at each other and laugh.
"Ladies, she can't be. He would never choose someone like her over me. She's too ugly and insignificant to be with someone like Marcus." They laugh even louder when they bump past me. I'm trying my hardest not to cry, but I can't fight it. I hurry towards the exit before anyone notices my tears.
"Hey! Leslie, wait up!" I wipe my eyes with my sleeves. I turn around quickly and see Brandon behind me, but I decide to keep walking. "Leslie, hold up a second. I just want to talk to you." I reluctantly slow my roll so that he can catch up with me. I rub my face again to wipe away any evidence of my sorrow. I notice he's still wearing his black and red Cardinal's football uniform when he approaches me.
"I just wanted to talk to you really quickly and see if you had a date to the Spring Formal." I look at him weirdly.
"What do you mean? I'm going with Marcus." Brandon shakes his head.
"Really? Because he just told me that he's going with Tori." I look confused.
"No. He's going with me. He said so last night."
"Well, I talked to him just now, and he said that Tori was begging him and making him feel all bad and whatnot, so he decided to take her instead." I take a deep breath, trying not to let Brandon's rumor upset me more than I already am.
"Well, I don't believe you." I turn around and walk away before he's able to say another word. I can't deal with this drama right now. I take out my phone and call Marcus as I hurry towards my house... no answer.
What have I gotten myself into?
