This story isn't about me. Not really. It's about one of my Best friend and her Augustus waters in real life.
Hazel and Gus na lang nickname nila, hope you guys don't mind. Although ibang ibang yung personality and love story nila kila Hazel at Augustus compare to the book(tfios). But it ended just the same…
Gus and hazel became friends in college. Same school, same course. They attended the same class for years. Sabay lagi umuwe kasi halos magkapitbahay lang sila. If two people spend that much time together, Di malayong mainlove sa isa't isa di ba?. And they did.
Obvious sa mga kilos nila towards each other. Everyone knew. Only two people didn't knew. Sino? Edi silang dalawa, kainis di ba? It was so frustrating. I wanted to give them a high five, in the face, with a chair. They concealed their emotion when all they have to do is to…let it go…let it go!(see what I did there.lel.waley.)
Habang tumatagal lalong nafafall si Hazel kay Gus. For me, great power comes with great responsibility…Este great love comes with great pain. Specially, kung nagmamahal ka ng palihim.
Hazel is probably one of the smartest girl na nakilala ko, but when it comes to love ehh…I'm not really sure…She'll complain about seeing gus with other girls. She gets jealous a lot.
She gets hurt a lot. I told her that she doesn't have the right to be upset with him, hindi naman kasi sila. Alam nya yun, pero ewan minsan nakakalimutan nya ata kaya pinapaalala ko kanya.
Kahit na alam ko na sa bawat paalala ko nasasaktan sya, nagbabaka sakali ako na either magsasawa na sya, maglet go or magconfess ng true feelings nya kay gus.
Pero kahit anong sabhin ko sa kanya walang epekto. Di sya nagsasawa masaktan at di sya napapagod magtago ng nararamdaman nya kay gus.
I'll be honest I got mad at Gus for so many times. Lagi nya pinapaiyak yung kaibigan ko, But he was also the reason behind her smile. At ang nakakainis pa dun he doesn't have any idea kung gano kalaki ang impact nya kay hazel.
Well maybe he's just acting like he wasn't aware of hazel's love for him. But either way, My best friend loved her the most… The more you love someone the more it'll hurt. You just have to ask yourself if it's worth it.
To hazel it was definitely worth it. Even though she told me so many times that she'd give up, that she hates him, that she'll forget him. At the end of the day Sya parin ang bukang bibig ni hazel.
He was her happiness. And I want to see her happy.
Kaya sabi ko na lang. "If it makes you happy, go push mo yan teh."
He will always ask her out, just the two of them. It was obviously a date. But, she kept insisting that it wasn't anything like that.(K…)
Magsisine sila, food trip, bibili nang kung anu-anong bagay na pangcouple.
Sa lagay na yun di pa sila…until now I find that hard to believe.lol. Anyway, Madalas din si gus napapasama kay hazel na bumili ng gamot nya.
Gus goes to school like a normal student, hangs out with us like a normal person, he had the most cheerful laugh that I heard. He smile all the time specially when hazel is around. You wouldn't think that he is suffering from a heart disease.
Nung Na-Ospital si Gus dun ko na-realize how serious his heart disease was. He lost some weight but he still looked good. He smiled just the same like nothing serious happened.
Hazel would always visit him, she took care of him, she was like his personal nurse.Ang cute nila pagmasdan parang mag-asawa lang sila. Sobrang sweet parang ginawang luneta park yung hospital.lol.Prang may sariling mundo lang. After that incident, naging mas maayos yung relasyon nila.
After nung mangyari narealize ko kung bakit ganun si gus kay hazel.
Akala ko he was being insensitive and selfish to hazel, but I was wrong. He was being selfless actually.
Perhaps he doesn't want hazel to get too attach to him because he was sick. Perhaps he didn't intend to hurt hazel for not telling her how much she really means to him because he doesn't want to make a promise that he can't fulfil.
That was just my conclusion, maybe he had more reasons. I wish I knew.At nagsisisi ako na hindi ko sya natanong.
After ilang months they slowly drifted apart. I don't know when or how exactly it happened. Alam ko lang they both started to avoid each other. I asked her kung break na ba sila or bakit sila nagbreak.
Ang sagot lang ni hazel. "Break? Hindi naman naging kami." Since then I felt her bitterness and sadness. She acts like she doesn't care about him anymore, Na super bitter sya para lang pagtakpan yung kalungkutan nya. She was heartbroken.
But then again Augustus was once again rushed to the hospital. Inatake sya ng mild stroke. Nakita ko kung gano kanerbiyos at nagalala si hazel. She wanted to see him so badly. And she did as soon as possible.
Just few months before maospital si Gus, Hazel found out na pupunta sa Japan si Gus para dun magpagaling. Hazel felt happy and sad at the same time. Happy kasi gagaling na sya, Malungkot kasi aalis si Gus at matatagalan sya dun. Parang gusto nya na ayaw umalis si Gus.
But of course she wanted the best for him so tinanggap nya na lang. She decided to give Gus something bago man lang umalis. Hiningi nya yung tulong ko at ngisa pa naming bff na gumawa ng scrap book or shall I call it confession book?lol. Nilalaman nun lahat ata ng di nya masabi kay Gus, at mga sweet photos nila together.
Gus stayed at the hospital for more than two weeks. He and hazel patched things up between them. Then again she was like his personal nurse. Almost every day bumibisita si hazel kahit busy sya sa skul, she always make sure na makakabisita sya kay Gus.
Although it was harder for her to take care of Gus than the last time, because Gus became more unpredictable, madalas magmood swing dahil nadin sa dami ng gamot binibigay sa kanya, at tubes na nakakabit sa kanya.
It hurts hazel to see him act differently and suffer like that. Seeing him dealing with a great pain crashes her heart bit by bit. All she can do was be there to hold his hand and let Gus squeeze it so hard every time that he was in pain. Kahit na mamaga yung kamay nya, she doesn't care. Di parin sya bibitaw kahit masakit.

Gus passed away…Just the days after he was dismissed at the hospital. We didn't see it coming. Lahat nabigla. We thought that he was getting better. But we were wrong. Di na pala kinaya ng katawan nya. Complications in his body caused his death.
Until now pagkasama ko si hazel I can still see and I somehow feel her sadness. Kahit gaano nya itago sa mga tawa at ngiti nya. But I know that she's strong and sooner or later I would see that bright and genuine smile of hers again.
Their love story may not be one of those fairy tale stories, hindi man natin na masabing "Happy Ending". But what's important is that their love for each was real, that Gus existed and loved hazel. For me, their love story would always be alive.
