When I woke the next morning, Kellan had already left for work. I walked into the bathroom and stared at my reflection in the mirror. My hair was a wavy, onyx mess that almost reached my butt. I fluffed it and sighed. After brushing my teeth I washed my face and didn't bother with brushing my hair, I wouldn't see anyone today, I rationalized. I shut the light off and walked into the hallway. a startled gasp left my lips as I bumped into a solid body just outside the bathroom doorway"SHIT," the male voice said grabbing onto my arms
I glanced up and noticed it was Milo who was now holding onto me after our collision.
"Oh my god, you scared me!" I grabbed my chest and sank down into a crouch.
"You're definitely not who I was expecting to see this morning" he laughed "what are you doing here?"
"I stayed the night. What are you doing here?" I asked, looking up at him from my position on the floor.
" I usually come and take the dog out for a while. I guess Kellan just forgot to tell me that you were here."
I finally stood and as I did I noticed Milo's eyes drifting down my body. I subconsciously wrapped my arms around my thinly covered bare chest.
"You know, surprisingly, the sweats are sexier than the skirt" he laughed and my cheeks burned.
"Thanks?" I say brushing past him heading to the living room.
"You're more than welcome. I mean I'd like them more if they were mine and not your brothers'' he stated, following me down the hall " but this is only the second day I've known you, we still have time."
I rolled my eyes dramatically even though the thought of his sweatpants loosely hanging on my hips intrigued me.
"Are you always like this?"
" like what? Charming? Incredibly handsome? Irresistible? Yes, I am all of those things and more, always."
I chuckled and plopped down on the couch. To my surprise, Milo followed and sat down on the other end of the couch, and faced me.
" oh, are you staying?" I asked. The thought of being alone with him made my stomach feel weird, I just wasn't sure if the feeling was excitement, desire, or fear of it possibly being one of those reasons.
" yea for a bit. I usually stay and spend some time with Sky, let her play and stuff. Plus now I get to spend some time getting to know you " he smirked and unfortunately, it was incredibly sexy.
" Well I guess I wouldn't mind some company, I'm bored anyway."
" Good, cus now that I've met you, I have to know you," he said, making a grand gesture of getting comfortable on the couch. He pulled his feet up and sat crossed-legged with his chin in his hands.
I couldn't help but laugh at him, he was infectious. I didn't want to be intrigued by him. I didn't want normal friends in my life to make me see just how screwed up my life actually was. And I just knew that getting to know Milo would do exactly that. I'd learn what it was like to have a normal male friend and hate being in my dysfunctional relationship even more. I'd learned how a normal male treated women and I was scared that learning that would teach me to accept nothing less. But all the same, I couldn't deny that I was curious.
We sat and talked for hours before I had even realized it. I could see why he was my brother's best friend. Milo was incredibly kind-hearted and would do anything for the people he cared for. I had learned his favorite food was Ramen, he was incredibly passionate about fast cars and loved autumn the most out of all the seasons. We shared a mutual hatred for sand and generally everything related to the beach. We also shared a favorite dessert of smores. I quickly realized I wanted nothing less than to be friends with him. And that terrified me.
" I better get going." Milo finally said before standing and stretching. I watched as his shirt pulled up, creating a space of tanned skin to show between his sweats and his tee. I couldn't take my eyes off of that sliver of skin. " don't worry," he smiled and my eyes shot up to meet his. " You'll get to see more eventually," winking at me as he walked to the front door. " Be a good girl and have some patience, I like to be wined and dined before I give my goods away." he laughed and shut the door.
I was speechless. I sat on the couch replaying the entire day over and over in my mind. I had never met someone so confident and I loved it. A couple of hours later Kellan walked through the door from work.
" Hey El, did Milo stop by earlier?" he asked, throwing his keys on the table and grabbing the remote to turn the T.V on.
" Yeah. It would seem that you forgot to tell me that he usually does that," I said narrowing my eyes at him
" Yeah, I guess I probably could have told you. Honestly El, I really just didn't want you to be alone all day, I figured you could use a friend for the day.
" Wait, you set it up for him to come by? He said he lets out Sky all the time for you"
" yea, I definitely set it up, sky isn't a puppy she stays home all the time." he just smiled and shook his head " so listen I was thinking your birthday is coming up the big three-zero! Let's plan something."
" Kellan, I really don't want to make a big deal out of it." I groan
" nonsense. I was thinking of something big, like let's take a weekend trip. How's Miami sound ."
" what? Are you serious? Why Miami ?"
" So we can party for your birthday, of course ."
I couldn't lie and say the thought of having a fun weekend didn't sound amazing.
" I'll think about it," I promised. " I should probably head back home if you don't mind driving me."
I knew Kellan would hate taking me back but he would.
