A tall, aarakocra-like paladin with flame-colored feathers hurls a bolt of flame at a lich king.

Ability Score Increase: Your Wisdom increases by 2 and your Constitution increases by 1.

Speed: You have a walking speed of 30 feet and a flying speed of 50 feet. You cannot use the flying speed if you are wearing medium or heavy armor.

Alignment: Phoenixborn tend towards lawful alignments and can be either good or evil, though evil phoenixfolk are rare.

Age: Phoenixborn mature at age 20 and live for up to 1000 years.

Fire Affinity: You can cast the spell fire bolt and this doesn't count against your number of known spells. You also have resistance to fire damage.

Cursed Resurrection: If you are killed, you can choose to make a Constitution saving throw with a DC of 8 + your Proficiency modifier + your Wisdom modifier. On a failure, you die and cannot be brought back with anything less than a true resurrection spell. On a success, you are brought back at full health, but you lose two levels and your alignment is forcibly and irreversibly shifted one step towards chaotic due to an ancient curse laid on your people. If your alignment is already chaotic, then your alignment is forcibly and irreversibly shifted one step towards evil. If you are already (whether by choice or because of this feature) chaotic evil or have no levels left after the reduction, then you cannot use this feature and cannot be brought back at all, not even with a wish spell.

Fallen Phoenixborn (Subrace)

Alignment: Chaotic Evil, either if you chose to be or if you were forced into it by Cursed Resurrection.

Necrotic Affinity (replaces Fire Affinity): Instead of fire bolt, you can cast toll the dead and this doesn't count against your number of known spells. You have resistance to necrotic damage.

Cursed: The curse upon your people has reached it's apotheosis. You are weak to fire damage, lose the ability to fly, and your lifespan is shortened to 500 years.

Purified Resurrection (Feat)

Prerequisites: Good alignment, Phoenixborn, 20th level

You have discovered a way to break the ancient curse on your people and purify your resurrective powers.

Using your resurrection ability now no longer forcibly changes your alignment, however you still cannot change your alignment if it has been affected by Cursed Resurrection in the past. You can still lose the ability to resurrect if you lose all of your class levels.
