He waited for the creak of the bed as she got up,

Waited for the groan of the floorboard,

And waited for the click of the door as she left through it.

It never came.

All is fair in love and war.

Tommy had heard the phrase before, muttered by Polly over a cup of tea. Of course, the entire notion seemed utterly, ridiculously problematic and had never really made sense. The worst part was the fact he'd taken advantage again and again whether he'd meant to or not. The list was long. Painfully so.

The road was cold against Tommy's back as he silently cursed that day, Polly loudly flicking through page after page of her newspaper before settling on an article of an American crime couple. "Just like the shot you took. Now..." Tommy couldn't bite back his smile as she tutted at him and shook her head. Perhaps he'd hit his head when he'd hit the ground but there was something different about the space between them. A space understood. "How about we get you home?"

"Will you patch me up?" Even if it wasn't quite home, but a dingy apartment space in London. Though for a moment he had to wonder if home was more of a state of mind than it was an actual physical place. Because Bryce... Well...
