Chapter 1- im back

-1986-

It was sunny outside, I was doing my make up for graduation. "I'm so excited, finally done with high school" My friend Tanya says. I smiled at her. She's been my bestie since 2nd grade. "What you doing after high school Dayna" She asked me. "I have no idea, I really think I want to move to California and start my own career" I said putting lipstick on. "Yes girl, your voice is seriously beautiful. You write the cutest songs" She says.

Graduation was starting I was so hype. I been working part time at this restaurant as a waitress since i was 16, saving every single penny. I walked to my seat and saw Justin. Me and Justin been dating for a year now. People thought we wasn't gonna last cause he's white and I'm black, but color don't matter! What's wrong with you people. "Hey babe, you look amazing" He says then gave me a kiss. "You looking great yourself" I said. We went back to kissing. "Dont swallow each other" Tanya says. We pulled away and chuckled.

We sat down waiting to hear our names. "Did you hear New Edition is coming to perform a song" I hear someone whisper behind me. My eyes got wide. Wait what?

I tapped Tanya who's on my right. "Did you hear that" I whisper to her. "What" She asked. "I heard someone say New Edition is coming" I whisper to her. "Wow really? That's crazy. Don't worry. Probably not true" She says back to me. She held my hand. "Next up is Tanya Kent" They say. Tanya ran to the stage smiling and grabbing her diploma. I clapped and cheered for her. "Next, Dayna Smith" They shout. I rushed to stage waving at everyone as they cheered for me. I grabbed my diploma and ran back to my seat.

After they said everyone they had an announcement. "Ok congratulations everyone, you now officially Roxbury High Graduates! So we have someone who's gonna perform for us. She performs for all of the talent shows and dances. Give it up for Dayna Smith" They said. I gave Justin a hug before going on stage. "Nothing negative Dayna" Principal Kina says. I nodded taking the microphone from her. I looked at everyone who was still clapping and smiled. I started singing my original song that I wrote for this day called 'Believe In us' Everyone got us clapping and cheering me on. I ended the song with a high note and bow. All those cheers, I know I'm gonna be someone!

I gave the microphone back to principal Kina and went back to my seat. "Give it up for Dayna Smith everyone" She says. Everyone clapped again. "Great job baby as always" Justin says to me holding my hand. "Thanks hun"I said. "Now our next performance just got here. They ran a little late. This was a surprise for you students, especially the ladies" She says. I got a bit nervous. "You ok" Justin asked me. I nodded. "New Edition" principal Kina yells, everyone screams. "No way" Justin says. He was a new edition fan himself. New edition ran out on stage. Only 4, since Bobby was removed, so I read in the magazines.
"Oh gosh" Tanya says.

"Wassup Roxbury High" Mike says. "We here because we are from right here in Roxbury, came to this school also. We just had to finish school on the road sadly" Ronnie says. "So we gonna perform a song written by Ralph here. It's also on our New Album Under The Blue Moon" Ricky says. I actually like that name for a album. Ralph came up. "Yes I wrote this song, had to get my feelings out someway. Called 'Tears On My Pillow'" He says. Tanya looked at me. I shook my head no to her. Gosh this better not be about us!

The music started and they all started dancing. Ralph came to the front.

"You don't remember me, but I remember you

Pain in my heart, caused by you" He started singing looking through the audience.

"If we could start a new
I wouldn't hesitate
I'd gladly take you back

Pain in my heart, caused by you" He continued. I looked down. "Gosh I wonder who broke his heart" Justin says. I already know, it's about me and him. I can't believe this.

He saw me in the audience and just stared at me but kept singing.

"Love is not a gadget
Love is not a toy
When you find the one you love
She'll fill your heart with joy"

Once they finished everyone screamed and clapped. I felt a tear as the memories came back. Justin clapping for them then saw me. "Baby what's wrong? That song really got to you huh" He says then chuckles. Tanya punched his arm. "Shut up white boy" Tanya says as he rubs his arm. "Dayna let's just go" Tanya says pulling a tissue out her purse. She wiped my tears and fixed my make up. "There's my little girl, I mean big girl. Congratulations" My mother says running to me. She hugged me tightly. "Hi mom" I said. "Sweetie what's wrong" She asked. I didn't say anything. "I just need a moment" I finally said. She nodded and walked away with Tanya. I don't know where Justin went to.

I just couldn't stop thinking about that song. Did I really hurt him that bad? We was great friends, but....it just couldn't go on.

"Dayna" I hear a voice. I look up and saw Ralph. Oh no. He came to me and held my hand. "It's been so long" He says. I miss his touch, I really do. But I pulled my hand away. He grew up so much. "What you can't talk to me now" He asked. "Ralph, we shouldn't be talking" I said. "Dayna, I missed you so much. I know you didn't forget about me" He says. "How can I, New Edition is in every single magazine" I said. He chuckled. I smiled a bit, missing his laugh and chuckles. "That's the smile I miss seeing everyday" He says smiling back. He leaned forward and tried to kiss me but I swerved him.

"Ralph I can't, we broke up 3 years ago. I moved on" I said taking 2 steps away.  "Wait...you have a new man already" He asked. I nodded. "Dayna there you are" Justin says. He wrapped a arm around me and kissed my cheek. "Whoa Ralph Tresvant, big fan man" Justin says holding his hand out to shake hands with Ralph.  "And he's a white dude too? What the hell Dayna" Ralph says getting mad.

"Oh you know my Dayna" Justin asked. "Yea, I know her pretty well, cause she was mine before" Ralph says. I rolled my eyes. "Wait you dated Ralph Tresvant before, why didn't you tell me this" Justin asked me. "Cause that's none of your business Justin.  That's my past and it stays in the past" I said. "Hey Rizz, you ready" Ricky says as the boys came to him. "Whoa Dayna, good to see you again girl" Ronnie says smiling at me. Damn he's tall. "One minute slick" Ralph says to Ricky. "So what we had really was Nothing to you Dayna, my song that I sung up there for you means nothing" Ralph asked getting serious. 
"So that's why you started crying" Justin says crossing his arms. "She what" Ralph says.
I can't take all of this.

"I'm going home" I said walking away from all of them. I can't handle this. I saw my mother and Tanya.  "I'm ready to go home now" I said. "But I thought we was gonna go to dinner and talk about you moving for your career" My mother says confused. "Not in the mood. Please just take me home" I said. I gave Tanya a hug then my mother and I drove home.

As soon as we got home I rushed to my room and slammed my door closed. I layed in bed and couldn't stop thinking about the good times me and Ralph had. Why did he have to come back? I thought we was done for good.
