paul stared at the door in cynthia's apartment, waiting for the moment that elaine would walk in.

"mccartney... mccartney!" snapped nora, waving her hands in his face, "earth to paul, i was asking if you wanted another beer!"

"yeah that would be lovely, i'm sorry nora, i suppose i'm a bit off tonight..."

"you think? you've been so preoccupied with that door!" she laughed, popping the top off of another beer for paul. "waiting for someone, i'm guessing?" she raised her eyebrow.

"yeah, john just told me that elaine would be here... i suppose i should just talk to the others instead of wastin' my time..." he sulked, sipping his beer and gazing at the people around the room.

"why don't you just ask audrey? she doesn't bite," nora pointed across the room.

paul considered for a second, not wanting to be pushy and being a bit intimidated by elaine's sister. he nodded.

paul stood up out of the chair and chugged the rest of his beer. he walked through the crowd to audrey, who was chatting with cynthia and some other girls. she was sitting on an older-looking man's lap who held a glass of whiskey in his hand.

wrong party for that, snob. he thought to himself.

"audrey? i've gotta' quick question for ya'" he began, slightly nervous.

the man she was sitting on jerked his head over to face him.

"what do you need, buddy," he spoke, condescendingly, taking a sip of his whiskey.

"well i was just wonderin' if audrey's sister was plannin' on stopping by... john said she was and i just wanted to know where she was--"

holden snorted. "oh, the bird you were messin' with last weekend huh? wouldn't be surprised if she was ignoring you for a reason..."

"holden!" audrey screamed, pushing his face playfully. "don't mess with the poor boy. she was having a kip after her modeling session this morning with nora, we didn't wanna interrupt her beauty sleep... feel free to go up to her and wake her if you please." she added, holding her keys out to him.

paul sighed. "it's ok, i suppose i just wanted to make sure she was ok...i don't wanna be too much. thanks audrey." he returned bleakly, turning around to make his way back to his seat.

"wait," the man chimed, "i'll bring you up there, man." he slid audrey off of his lap, standing up next to paul.

paul nodded, following the man through the crowd and into the hallway. the two made their way up the stairs to the outside of elaine's apartment.

"so i take it you're audrey's boyfriend?" paul spoke, breaking the silence.

"fiancee," he growled.

the two men stood there awkwardly for a moment before paul broke the silence again.

"so, are you going to unlock the door?"

"oh, no, buddy" he laughed, ruffling pauls hair. "i'm just thinking of some words to say to you, motherfucker..." he slurred.

"excuse me?"

"i don't wanna see you around these girls, especially audrey, you hear me?" he forcibly pushed paul up against the wall, making his heart race. "they're sort of a package deal, ya'know" he sputtered, blowing his hot whiskey breath in paul's face. "i'll fucking kill you. and don't think i'm just bluffing... i know a guy. and if he can't do it, i will" he shifted his hands, grabbing paul's neck.

paul's eyes widened, intimidated by the man. usually, he would never let someone talk to him like that, let alone push him around. holden was different-- towering inches over him and being years older.

"i heard everything about elaine... now, i don't care for her much, if i'm being honest, but it's a little too close for comfort for me. that girl has changed since she's moved to this trash ass town and met your little crew," he spat, pointing his finger in his face. "and the last thing i need is ma' girl doing the same, ya'hear? if i hear about you hangin' around these girls too much, there'll be hell to pay. the last thing i need is my finance bein' with some bad boy wannabe blokes. i'll show you a real fuckin' bad boy..."

paul nodded, not sure what to say to get himself out of the situation. there was no way he was going to agree to forbid himself from seeing elaine.

just as he began to form a response, the door swung open. holden quickly dropped his grip from paul's neck.

"why hello elaine, funny seeing you, i was just bringing my new pal up to wake you!" he explained in a fake happy voice.

elaine peered down the side of the hallway to a disheveled-looking paul.

"hey, elaine." paul managed, still getting over the shock of the situation.

"oh, hi paul! fancy seeing you here!" she giggled.

the three made their way down the stairs into the party again, where paul immediately found the farthest corner from holden. holden returned to audrey as elaine found john to wish him happy birthday.

"hey stranger, why don't you come have a dance with me?" elaine cooed into paul's ear from behind, scaring him.

oh boy, did he want to. elaine looked especially stunning that night-- she had her hair done in a way he hadn't seen on her before. her makeup was heavier than usual, but still tasteful, enhancing her natural beauty perfectly. she wore a tight black dress that accentuated her body in all of the right ways.

"i'm not sure i should do that..." he sighed, handing her a beer.

elaine frowned. "oh... why? i'm sorry it was stupid of me to assume--"

"no, no, elaine, it's not you, its him..." he gestured across to holden, who was staring intensely at the two of them.

"oh god... what did he do now?" she groaned, taking a sip of her beer and wincing at the bitter taste.

"well, when we went up to wake ya', he pushed me into the wall an' told me he was gonna kill me..." he whispered, making sure to not draw attention, "he basically forbade me from seeing you and audrey..."

elaine laughed. "forbade you from seeing me? i thought he was a nutcase trying to control my sister, but now he's trying to control me? i've had enough!" she muttered.

"i don't know elaine, he really frightened me, y'know... am i crazy for believing him?" paul responded, meeting his cold gaze across the room.

"if he actually was capable of killing you, then i'm a monkey named loretta. there's no damn way!" she took another sip of her beer.

"i'm sorry you've got to deal with that, love. he's intense, i can't even imagine what audrey puts up with..."

elaine shrugged. "she told me she likes it. but i draw a line at him trying to do the same to me," she sighed, grabbing on to paul's jacket and pulling herself closer to him. "y'know what would really piss him off?" she breathed, staring at his lips.

paul sharply inhaled, understanding her reference. he closed his eyes and pressed his forehead to hers. she grabbed his neck and moved closer, kissing him passionately.

in that moment, they weren't in a room full of people. they were in their own little world. he grabbed her back, pulling her in deeper and moving his lips with hers. she threw her arms around his neck as he let his tongue enter her mouth. their tongues danced for a moment before they were interrupted.

"get a goddamn room, macca!" laughed john, grabbing him by his head and pulling him away from elaine. "it's too damn early in the night for this, man! wait till midnight at the least to do that 'ere!" paul's face flushed, realizing that all of his friends had watched him in a vulnerable moment.

"we could go upstairs if you like..." suggested elaine in a whisper. paul nodded. she grabbed his hand and lead him through the crowd, out of cynthia's apartment. once they were in the hallway, he surprised her with a kiss again, pushing her against the wall and running his hands up her body.

elaine kissed him back excitedly. for once, she was not questioning her decision to be with paul. in that moment, it felt right. maybe it was in spite of holden and her sister, but she was growing fond of paul's presence around her. nothing stopped her as she led him up the next set of stairs and into her apartment.

the two made it into her room where they sat on the bed and continued what they had started in the apartment downstairs. paul trailed kisses slowly down her neck, stopping at her collarbone. he pushed her hair behind her ear and whispered to her.

"you've got to be the most beautiful girl i've set my eyes on, elaine."

he finished his sentence by kissing behind her ear and down her neck again. he pulled her on top of him, her legs now straddling him. as he ran his hands up the back of her legs, she pushed him back on the bed, grabbing on to the hem of his shirt and playing with the soft fabric as she took her turn kissing his neck. she hovered over him, running her fingers through his hair. she made her way to his chest, where she then slowly unbuttoned his shirt and gave him more slow kisses. paul shifted, taking his shirt the rest of the way off. elaine drank in the site of him looking completely handsome laying underneath her. she smirked.

tentatively, he pulled her dress off of her and threw it across the room. he ran his fingertips over her bare skin, giving her goosebumps.

just as he began to take in the view of her in her undergarments, she stopped in her tracks.

"you alright, love?" he questioned, sitting up.

"yes, paul... it's just-- nobody's seen me like this before...and i think i'm overthinking it..." she sighed, rolling off of him and onto the bed next to him. "i'm not going to lie, i'm a bit insecure about my figure..."

paul gazed at her in the dark room, taking in all of her beauty. "we can stop, love. s'allright." he purred, snuggling in next to her and kissing her forehead while running his fingers up and down her bare stomach.

"i'm sorry i lead you on, i guess i thought i was more ready than i really am..."

"please don't apologize, lainey. i completely understand. just know, i think you're the most beautiful girl in the whole world. don't ever worry about the way you look. you're blessed." he affirmed, staring at her tall, perfectly proportioned body and glowing skin. "i'd wait however long for you, i want you to be comfortable, love."

"you called me lainey..." she giggled.

"i suppose it slipped... i'm sorry," he blushed.

"no, its charming... i like it. y'know audrey is basically the only one who calls me that,"

"well you can add me to the list, lainey," he emphasized, teasingly poking her on the nose.

elaine giggled, turning away from his childlike badgering and pulling his arms around her.

"y'know, you're lucky..." returned elaine, rubbing his hand that rested on her chest.

"and why is that?"

"you don't have to sleep on the floor next to me tonight."
