I laid there staring at my turquoise colored wall. I glanced around thinking about how grateful I was to have a beautiful room. But then I looked at my messy white desk. My homework still wasn't done! I remember staying up all night, but never finished it. I glanced at my alarm clock, realizing I was running late I decided to get dressed.
When I was ready to go I gathered my homework and went downstairs. When I reached the bottom of the stairs I heard the bus honking at me. I quickly grabbed an apple out of the fridge, when I noticed a piece of paper on the counter with my name on it. The bus honked again. I grabbed the note and ran outside, slamming the door.
The bus doors opened, letting a blast of warm air hit me in the face. I walked up the stairs to see my favorite bus driver."How ya doin today Ava?" He asked.
"Fine Earl how about you?"
"Just dandy today thank you! Are you going to that big dance tonight?"
"Do you mean the Spring Formal?"
"That's the one! I met my beautiful wife at that dance. It was the best day of my life."
"That's great Earl but I'll know when it's time for me."
I worked my way to the back of the bus, where I found my favorite spot. I knew the ride would take an hour since I lived outside of town. I pulled out my homework to find out it was pretty much all done except for a science packet. I pulled my phone and earbuds out of my pocket. I turned on some music and got lost in my science homework. When the bus stopped I got up and walked back down the isle.
"Have a good day sweetheart"
"Thanks Earl, I'll try!" Tell your wife I said hello!"
"Will do! I'll see you after school."
I quickly said goodbye to Earl and made my way to my locker. I grabbed my favorite lime green pencil and my books and walked to my first class. My first class was science. One of my favorite subjects! As I was sitting down at my desk the teacher, Mrs. Burnfield put a piece of paper on my desktop. When I saw the paper I asked her what it was about.
"Mrs. Burnfield what is this?"
"A pop quiz Ava! Its about the homework we had last night." She told me.
I grabbed my pencil and began writing. To my surprise I knew almost every single answer! I was kind of happy I forgot to do my homework. If I never would've done it on the bus I would've got a bad grade. After that, all my classes seemed like a breeze.
When Earl pulled up to my house he told me to run inside and see if my parents were home. They almost always are, so I was surprised when I realized they weren't. I went outside and told Earl they weren't there, so he said he would wait with me until they came. Since I was his last stop of the day he turned the bus off and came into the house with me. Earl was a friend of my parents, so I knew him well. After two hours went by he decided to call his wife and tell her to come over and see us. When Earl's wife Evelen arrived she headed straight to the kitchen. She started making dinner for us. When we all sat down at the dining room table she asked what I thought."It's very good Evelen! You always make the best lasagna."
"Thanks Ava! We all needed something to calm our nerves. Your parents should've been home by now."
It was at that moment I remembered the note I grabbed of the counter this morning. I quickly got up and ran to my room. Earl and Evelen got up and ran after me. I grabbed my book bag off my bed and fumbled through it. They asked what I was doing but all I could say was.....
"The note!"
When I finally found it I pulled it out and handed it to Earl. He then began reading it aloud.....
"Dear Ava, today me and your father are attending a seminar for work. We don't want you to be alone so we would like you to talk to Earl and Evelen about staying the night. We should be home early tomorrow morning. We love you so much, and we'll see you soon."
"Of course you can come stay with us tonight! You get packed, and come downstairs when you're ready." Evelen told me.
When I was packed and ready to go we got on the bus and started driving in the opposite way of town. When we were a couple miles away from my house we noticed skid marked all over the rode. Then out of the corner of my eye I noticed a car crashed in a pond. I told Earl and we pulled over. we hopped out of the car and ran over to the scene. It was then that I saw the license plates said "The Turners." I noticed my parents car was laying on its side in the pond. When Earl and Evelen realized what had happened, Evelen grabbed me up in her arms and started crying. Earl ran into the pond to examine the crashed car. He said there was blood on the roof of the car and what he thought was two bullet holes. I then pulled Evelen even closer and wept.
