Ashton's POV

I had turned 18 just a few weeks ago and I dreaded the arrival of my heat. I had been quietly sneaking off to the local apothecary and securing my fair share of heat suppressants whenever Jayce was at combat training.

Today, the heat seemed worse than usual. I entered the tent and greeted Dr Marsh. "I need a new batch of suppressants, I've been feeling hot lately." I complained. Dr Marsh tutted. "What would your father say if he knew what you were doing?" He asked with raised eyebrows. I gave him my best puppy dog eyes. "Please Dr Marsh, I don't want to be married off to a man I don't love." I pleaded. Dr Marsh only sighed.

"We've had some new imports. These blue pills are 3 times as strong as the usual ones. You'll need them considering you've been suppressing your heat for the last 2 months." He sighed defeatedly. I nodded my head eagerly. "Whatever stops my heat makes me happy." I said. Dr Marsh sighed. "Once your body grows accustomed to these blue pills, you will stay on them until they can no longer suppress your heat. I will not have you overdosing on heat suppressants." He warned. I nodded my head. "Okay. Just whatever works for now." I said, ignoring the full implications of what he had just said.

Later that day, Jayce and I spent our time down at the lake, weaving in and out of the caves in a game of hide and seek. Towards the evening, we settled down in our favourite cave near a soft bed of moss as Jayce started a fire. It was common for us to spend the night out together, sleeping in a cave. My father trusted Jayce and knew of his capabilities in protecting me.

"Jayce?" I called out. He turned from the fire and smiled when he caught my eyes roaming his body lustfully. "Your father wouldn't want to see you looking at me like that, Ash." He fussed playfully. I rolled my eyes. "When does your rut come?" I asked curiously.

He frowned. "I'm on rut suppressants." He answered evenly. It was my turn to frown. "Why do you need them?" I asked curiously. He shrugged his shoulders lazily. "Your father doesn't want me marking you, I'm an Alpha after all." He muttered bitterly. I frowned in confusion. "How long have you been on them?" I asked hesitantly. Jayce looked up. "Ever since you turned 16. They wanted to be safe so they made me start taking them early." He explained. My eyes swelled with tears. "It's bad for your health." I whispered.

Jayce's eyes moved down to meet mine. "That's not something you would know, Ashton." He was asking for an explanation. I crossed my arms over my chest. "I'm not as clueless as you think I am." I huffed indignantly. Suddenly, Jayce was pinning me to the ground and digging his nose into my scent glands. I twisted and turned but Jayce didn't relent. "You've suppressed it!" He exclaimed. "How long have you done this?!" He roared.

I whimpered and pushed at his chest. "Just a few weeks, starting from my 18th birthday." I answered feebly. Jayce glowered in disbelief. "Your father will kill me if he notices." He snarled. "I'd tell him you didn't know." I defended. "I would've noticed if I was doing my job properly." He said, standing aggressively.

Later that night, our room was filled with yet another awkward silence. "I hate it when you ignore me, Jayce." I whispered sadly. He pinched the bridge of his nose. "Stop saying such useless things." He muttered. I whined. "I-I love y-you." I confessed, my voice cracked towards the end. "Shh—" Jayce softly hushed me.

"Where are you getting your suppressants from?" He asked me, changing the subject. I turned away but he grabbed my chin and lifted my face so that his eyes were boring into mine. "Tell me." He ordered. "T-the a-apothecary." I stuttered. His eyes softened with relief. "At least you had the sense to visit Dr Marsh instead of getting them from some shady place." He sighed.

"How do you find the time to visit him?" He then asked. I didn't answer but Jayce pinched my ear as his eyes turned a golden brown. "C-combat t-training." I whimpered out. Jayce released my ear with a growl. "I should've known." He hissed.

"Starting from tomorrow, you'll accompany me to my combat training." He ordered. I shook my head in disbelief. "You sound just like my father." I berated. "I stand in your father's place on his behalf in his absence, Ashton." He growled. I rolled my eyes in response. "Starting from tomorrow, you accompany me to combat training. That is an order." He demanded. I looked away angrily but remained silent.
