“These dresses need to be perfect,” Lizzie announced from where she was perched on the edge of the dining hall table, overlooking the sewing club. She stared down at the mess of fabric in her hands. “And this is not perfect.”
The club leader scowled, needle frozen in the air.
“Josie’s needs to be taken down a size, and mine needs long sleeves,” Lizzie continued. She dropped the fabric in disgust.
“We already took Josie’s down a size,” the witch explained patiently.
“Well you need to do it again.” Lizzie rolled her eyes. They just weren’t getting it.
“Fine, but why do you need long sleeves?” she sighed. She studied Lizzie and her oversized sweatshirt. “We could do a three-quarter sleeve -”
Lizzie jerked her arm back as the witch reached for her sleeve to show her. “No!” Lizzie held the end of her sleeve secure against her wrist. She smiled and laughed nervously, keeping the fabric tight against her skin. “Four-quarter sleeve.”
The witch’s hand lingered in the air, and her wide eyes blinked slowly.
“Just finish the dresses,” Lizzie snapped, turning away from the concerned looks. “And stop making suggestions.” Lizzie stood up to address the masses. “My sister and I have been planning this day for a decade. While you were in diapers, we were preparing. Don’t mess it up.”
Lizzie gave them all one last warning look before she spun away to meet MG at the bottom of the stairs.
“How’s - how’s it going?” MG asked, spotting the dangerous look in Lizzie’s eyes.
“Terribly,” Lizzie scoffed. “I’ve been working my ass off trying to handle my and Josie’s campaigns, all the judges, all the events, and all the contestants. Meanwhile, they can’t even handle my very specific instructions for our dresses.”
From the table, someone called out, “I ran out of thread!”
Lizzie just let out a groan and looked over at MG. She shook the gloominess as quickly as she could, replacing her annoyance with a wide smile. “I have to make sure everything’s perfect for when my mom comes. She was Miss Mystic Falls when she was in high school. This one has to be just as good.”
“Are you sure you want to get your hopes up?” MG asked, treading carefully. “Remember when she said she was going to be here for your birthday?”
“She wouldn’t miss this.” Lizzie shrugged dismissively. “Both of her daughters are carrying on her legacy. You’ll see.”
MG just nodded. That was all he could do when Lizzie set her mind on something.
