Onika Tanya Maraj
"I tried it."
"Tried what? I need context." Robyn stated looking at Onika walk around her kitchen and Onika rolled her eyes. "I tried going on a date and it went terrible." She explained, she bent over to get some fruit from her fridge. She reached for a knife and Robyn looked at her expectingly. She's been begging Onika to get out there for awhile now.
Onika was talking to Robyn about her horrendous date she had to endure last weekend. She's been dodging Mr. Samuels since. He's tried talking to her, flirting with her again, but she always gave him a blank face and stale answers.
"How terrible?" Robyn asked intrigued; she was happy Onika took her advice but now she knew she was going to get clowned for it if it didn't go well. But that was okay—she had someone else Onika could date in mind.
"Imagine you go on a date right?" Onika started off and Robyn nodded. "And imagine they bring go on a full rant about themselves—"
"I would've left." Robyn stated immediately. Robyn could not stand anyone that constantly talked about themselves. She knew Onika couldn't either—Onika and her talked shit about People that did that. "I can't stand someone who only talks about themselves." She said rolling her eyes.
Onika nodded quickly, 100 percent agreeing. "I did leave! He started bringing up Malachi and I knew what he was going to say next and I just didn't want to hear it." Onika mumbled. She was sure she would've either flipped out on him, or cried infront of him and she did want to do either.
Robyn's anger spiked, "He brung up Malachi and—" Onika stopped her before she could utter the very name that made her heart wrench. She stopped cutting the fruit and paused, just to gather herself.
"He didn't bring up—both of them. But I knew he was going to." Onika mumbled. Robyn calmed down a bit, it was a sensitive subject for Onika. And for Robyn as well considering how close she was to the family.
"What kind of idiot brings up such a sensitive subject on a first date?" Robyn asked in annoyance. She would be damned if that horrible date would ruin her plan.
"It's definitely the first and last date. I don't know if I wanna try that shit again." Onika mumbled and Robyn shook her head immediately, she refused that answer.
"No! You can't give up after 1 bad date!" Robyn said with passion evident in her voice. She had to get her to give dating a try, because she wanted the best for her bestfriend. And the "best" may be Beyoncé. She knew Beyoncé—and she knew that she'd take her of her.
But If she wanted Beyoncé and Onika to end up together she knew Onika had to actually be up to going on a date.
"Why not? Maybe I don't need to start dating again Rih."Onika said sighing Robyn clicked her tounge and rolled her eyes. "You can't be so doubtful!" She said and Onika still shook her head and continued to cut her fruit. "Yeah yeah." She mumbled dismissing Robyn. But the raven haired girl wouldn't let it go.
"You tried dating for the first time in years, and you chose a bum ass gym teacher. Don't hate the game, hate the playa." Robyn said and Onika rolled her eyes this time.
"Fine, but—I'm not actively searching or anything." Onika claimed seriously.
"Maybe you should actively search." Robyn said and Onika quirked an eyebrow. "What is with y'all and wanting me to date so bad?" She asked while plaving some of the diced up fruit in a bowl.
"Well not only is it probably cobwebs down there—" Robyn immediately got cut off from her inspr
"Rude." Onika said interrupting Robyn, with a scoff.
"It's true. But maybe you like—really get out there and don't be shy and like flirt with people or something?" Robyn tried.
"I've never been that type Robyn." Onika said seriously. Onika never openly flirted—she didn't exactly get a chance to explore herself. Malachi was Onikas first relationship. Ever. She didn't even plan on dating in College—she never got a chance to really see what kind of flirt she was—i'd she was a flirt—or anything of the sort.
"You don't know if you've ever been that type. Your first serious relationship—shouldn't be your last." Robyn said in a note gentle tone, she knew it was a heavy topic. Onika sighed, "It's not just about Malachi—I mean—I feel like I'm replacing both of them." She admitted and Robyn frowned.
"I just don't want to get in a relationship as a way to cope. I want to actually like the person." Onika stated. "And that's exactly what you can do. Believe in ya self girl." Robyn said encouragingly. All she wanted was for her bestfriend to be happy—and have that sense of hope again.
She lost it along time ago.
"How about we hang out tonight? A girls night out? It ain't gotta be nothing with alcohol either unless you want it to be?" Robyn said hoping and Onika shook her head laughing. "No thank you." She said and she sighed. "Fine.." she grumbled. She suddenly perked up with an idea.
"We should go see a movie—walk around—maybe shop a bit—have a night out on the town! That's it! Let's go downtown where all the lights and shops are!" Robyn said and Onika thought about, she's always liked that part of town. "I haven't been there in forever.." She mumbled to herself. She looked to Robyn who was praying she accepted. Onika nodded. "Alright, that sounds fun." She decided. Robyn went in for the question she wanted to ask.
"Can I also invite my friend? She hasn't gotten out of the house in forever." Robyn said casually and Onika shrugged. "Sure. She's not crazy right?" She asked and Robyn shook her head chuckling.
"Oh no—she's pretty laid back—kind of a nerd if I'm being honest." She said and Onika chuckled herself, "Okay—yeah. You can invite her. I need to find someone to watch Blue though.." Onika trailed off. "Just get your mom to do it." Robyn said simply and Onika gave her a bored stare.
"I don't just like dumping my child on her when things come up." Onika said and Robyn groaned, rolling her eyes dramatically. "Listen here—that woman— loves Blue—and you're acting like you do this all time! When was the last time you traveled anywhere that was more than like 20 minutes away?" Robyn asked and Onika had to stop and think.
"The fact it's taking you more than 30 seconds to figure it out, gives me my answer. I'll call Mama Carol myself!" She said and Onika stopped her. "No! She's gonna complain about how I should be more like you." Onika said, her mother did believe she should be more like Robyn. Robyn was outgoing, she did whatever she wanted, she had fun—Onika took the more responsible stay at home route.
"As you should!" Robyn said with a grin.
"Do you know how many times you've gotten drunk, called me, and then asked where your phone was?" Onika asked and Robyn ignored her as she unlocked Onikas phone and found her mothers contact. She called it and she picked up within a few rings.
"Hi Mama C!" Robyn said and Onika tried to take the phone away from her, her kitchen island was blocking her as Robyn sat on the other side.
"Oh my gosh! Hi Robby! How've you been baby?" She asked and Onika shouted, "Ma! She's robbing me!" Onika shouted and Robyn rolled her eyes and spoke back into the phone. "Ya daughter ain't take her meds today don't mind her. So anyways—can you watch our baby Blue while I teach Onika what going outside like?" She asked and Carol agreed.
