 Damian's pov

My steps were light on the forest ground, careful not to snap a twig and giving my position to anyone who could be wandering here in the middle of the night. Tonight was the night for answers.

It had been hard not to alert my father. He had been suspicious as well as Kate. However she had kept her promise and didn't said a word. But I knew that my actions were watched by Bruce. After all this time living together, I never know if he ever trusted me completely. Our relationship was far from simple.

I walked under the trees, mist blurring the shapes of their roots. A low rumbling echoed above my head, a gust of wind twirling mist strips. A storm was about to start.

I knew I didn't have much time to talk to her before Batman, Nightwing or Batwoman interrupt us. I wasn't stupid enough to discard the glances they sent me when I said I was going to patrol for the night. My father might even have called James Gordon. After we came back from the wood factory, he had called him to explain what happened there. Since then, police officers had been working in the area. A call from their superior and they would be running into the wood, guns out.

A few more steps and I finally saw her silhouette among the trees and the mist. She was wearing her hood but not her mask and I could see the shape of her katana strapped to her back. She had seen me too. I stopped, letting some space in the middle.

We stayed silent and unmoving for a few minutes, the noises of the forest and of the storm surrounding us. I was afraid she might hear my heart beating like crazy. Seeing her again made our last encounter even more real. After years of thinking her dead, it was unbelievable. I still couldn't completely grasp that it was for real and not a twisted dream I was having.

"If you want answers, you'll have to ask questions." Her voice broke the strange bubble we had been in for the last minutes, gazing at each other. I straightened my posture. I needed answers and my emotions should not come in the way. Bigger things than me were on the table.

"We thought that the League had completely left Gotham after Mother fell into the waters. We weren't even sure if she had survived." I said.

She chuckled humourlessly.

"You should know better Damian. Talia is not easy to kill."

My mouth went dry after my name left past her lips. Her tone was way more cold and hateful than when she called me when we were kids.

"Why the league is in Gotham?" I finally asked.

"The Lazarus's pit." was her simple answer. I should have known that she wasn't going to tell me everything. She would have, a long time ago but now ...

"So now that the pit is gone, is the League leaving the city?"

"There are no many members left after your team blew up the factory." she stated. "But the rest are going back to HQ. They left this morning."

"Why didn't you leave with them?"

She smiled under her hood. "My mission here is not over yet." she answered.
