I think of how You suffered and died
How, in a jealous anger, You were crucified.
Thinking on what You went through,
Makes me angry - How could they do that to You?!
Then, I see in my hand is the hammer
Then guilt drops in my heart like an anchor
I caused Your blood, the glares that were cast
And in Your trial, I shouted for Barabbas.
I see the nails in Your hands, the thorns in Your brow
My sins had caused it, I can see it now.
Guilt rose up, justice it tried to demand
And I couldn't hide the hammer in my hand.
I went on trial, and pleaded guilty
Day and night, until day three.
A glorified hand touched my arm, stepping in
The charges were dropped, the guilty forgiven.
My heart dropped when I saw the face,
Eyes filled with love, offering me grace.
I cried to Jesus, told Him I was guilty.
He just smiled and said, "My son, you are free!"
I cried, surely He had seen what I had done -
I helped crucify God's only Son!
I killed Him, the blame was on me
Guilt blinded my eyes, and I couldn't see.
Christ just smiled, He lifted my face
"No one killed me, I gave up my life to bring grace."
Confused, I opened my mouth, ready to protest,
When Jesus said, "To forgive your sin - God gave His best."
Christ gave His life - no one took it from Him
Though His Crucifixion was grim.
He chose to take the punishment in our place,
He did it to show His love and His grace.
Grace, beyond understanding
He paid the price our sin was demanding.
Every sin was then erased,
To show the depth of His grace.
He chose to come, He chose to die,
He chose to take the punishment for sinners such as I.
He tore the veil, brought the temple to the ground
So we could come openly to God, and feel Him all around.
Even today, that grace still abounds
And lost sinners, such as I, can still be found.
The message of God's love and grace never changes
Just give up your life for the one that He exchanges.
Love so deep, I cannot understand
Grace so free from His nail-scarred hand
Though I don't deserve it, now I can see
Jesus chose to die out of love for you and me!
