Chapter 4                                                                                           Jamie

I felt a need to tell Rebecca that I would be there for her. Anytime she wants to talk, I’ll always listen. Anytime she needs a shoulder to cry on, I’ll let her cry on mine. Anytime she needs a hug, I’ll never be too far away to give her one.

All of what I’m thinking, I can never say aloud. If I did, how would people react? How would Rebecca react? All Rebecca knows is that I’m here for her at this moment in time; I’m with her all the way. But why did I feel the need to stop her hand going to her side? Why did I decide to hold her hand? To show how much I care?

Damn, she’s made my mind go blank. Why can’t I think straight when I’m around her?

As we walk through to the living room, she squeezes my hand then let’s go completely. I would have done the same but I wasn’t going to let her hand go when she needs me. What would the others have thought?

I look around her living room, it’s quite large. The two big sofas had everyone on them. They were talking and gossiping. The walls were white with pictures on them. The fireplace had photo’s on it too- old school photos of Rebecca and her elder sister, Alice. I saw a pile of presents on the rug.

‘SURPRISE!’

I looked at Rebecca to see her reaction. She looked shocked but let out a slight smile, knowing that she was cared for.

‘Thank you everyone’

She sounded deeply honest with her thanks.

‘It was Jamie’s idea, we just pieced it together’

Her eyes widened as she whipped her look towards me from the small pile of presents for her. If I can make her smile now, I know for sure that I am good for her. If I can make her smile, I know that I can’t leave her when she’s upset. I paused. Everyone paused and fell silent. Fell silent waiting, just waiting. All eyes were on Rebecca, only her expression would change everyone’s tenseness.

I held my breathe...

‘Thank you Jamie’

She said it with true gratitude and let out a smile, her biggest smile in weeks that have passed. After looking me in the eye for a moment, she hugged me, around the neck- just because she could... or is there another reason?
