Since April Fools Day was like- just the other day, I felt like starting off with this. So here we go. Also, apologies for any spelling errors. I type fast and was kinda just spewing out ideas for this one //
(Also, is it just me, or did April Fools just straight up suck this year?)(———)
April Fools Day was the worst
It wouldn't be hard to guess that she hated April fools day. She was cold, inclosed, made snappy remarks, and so on. So it wasn't a shocker that Maki Harukawa hated this day the most, right after Halloween that is.What made this day even worse is that one of her classmates treated this Holiday like it was an early Christmas or something.
Kokichi Oma was a major headache to deal with on most days, but today especially. He was pretty much a celebrity on April first because of the elaborate and obnoxious pranks he played.
Whoever the hell ran this dreadful earth must have cursed her when she was put in the same homeroom as the ultimate prankster himself. She had managed to avoid him for most of the years prior, but now she was going to have to deal with him on the worst day of the fucking year.
The dreadful sound of her alarm clock had woken her up this morning, and she already knew that it was going to be hell on earth at school that day. Not even it being a Friday would help. She was screwed.
So here she was now, walking through the halls with her two friends Shuichi Saihara and Kaito Momota.
She hadn't bothered to tap in on what they were talking about- it was most likely pointless anyway. Either Kaito ranting about space facts or Shuichi talking about a new novel that he was reading. She would listen on most days, but today she wasn't in the mood.
It wasn't until a string of words caught her ears that she actually bothered to pay attention.
"What do you think Kokichi's going to do today for April Fools? He pulls pranks all throughout the day every year."
Ah yes, the reminder that today was going to be a living nightmare."Who knows. All I want to do is stay out of his way. Im not in the mood for any of his bullshit." She scoffed, finally tuning into the conversation. "I mean, it can't be that bad. Right? He wouldn't do anything that extreme. He may be the ultimate prankster, but doing anything really bad would get him into detention for a weak or two at least." Kaito attempted to reason.
Rolling her eyes, she was about to push open the door to their homeroom when she stopped in her tracks.
"There's something behind the door."
Shuichi stopped and looked at her, then the door, and her again. Kaito didn't look phased. "I doubt it. Plus, the teacher had to have walked inside this morning. So there's no way that he could have done anything."
In order to prove himself right, Kaito pushed open the door to the classroom...
Only to be met with a bucket of water splashing on his head.A cackle could be heard behind the trio, and she knew who the perpetrator was. Kokichi Oma.
She was a strand away from just strangling him right then and there, but someone grabbing her arm snapped her out of it.
"Leave him alone Maki. It's not worth it to get a detention, or even a suspension." Shuichi spoke timidly. "Yeah Ms. Assassin! Plus, it wasn't even me. Pinky promise. I would neverrrrr do any such thing. Maybe it was Miu in an attempt to get me." Kokichi smirked.
That damn smile made her even more pissed, but she insisted chose to shake off Shuichi's grip and storm into the classroom to take her seat, thankfully not encountering any pranks on the short walk.

The rest of the day went along with cruel and annoying pranks from the liar. From what she heard, Miu got a hand buzzer trick, Tenko and Himiko got the same water bucket prank as Kaito, and his roommate Rantaro ended up getting the whip cream morning hand slap prank. And that was just before lunch.
Surprisingly, she had managed to avoid any kind of prank that she could think of. But she wasn't going to let down her guard just yet. Especially since her lunch table was right next to Oma's.
Sitting down after getting her food, she noticed that Kaede Akamatsu was missing. Kaede was originally a friend of Shuichi, but had sort of joined their group when Shuichi and Kaito had befriended each other. Kaede and Kaito also happened to be childhood friends, but that was a different matter.
"Where's Kaede?" She asked, poking at her good with her fork out of suspicion. Who knows, maybe Kokichi had managed to get the lunch ladies in on his schemes.
"I honestly have no clue. She looked bad when I saw her in French, but I haven't seen her since. Say Kaito, don't you share fourth period with her?" Shuichi questioned.
Nodding, Kaito spoke. "Yeah. She asked to go to the nurse because she felt sick. She might still be there." Kaito answered.
Well, that was just great. She reached for her drink, and unscrewed the lid only to be met with a suprise.
The classic snake in a can trick.Although, it wasn't stuffed snakes, it was paper snakes. That was enough to annoy her. She may be overreacting, but she really wasn't in the mood for anything. She had been avoiding the little asshole all day for a reason.
Storming out of the lunch room and ignoring Shuichi and Kaito's calls for her to come back, all she could think about was how pushed she was in that moment with Kokichi.
She didn't know how long it had been, but she soon found herself sneaking inside the Janator's closet. It would get her a weeks detention of she was found out, but she really didn't care at that point. She just wanted to be alone.
"So you needed to get away from him as well, huh?"
Stand her corrected. In the corner was a figure, but she didn't need her eyes to adjust to the light to recognize who it was.
"We were wondering where you were. Kaito and Shuichi said that you looked sick. What happened?" She asked, walking over to where Kaede was.
A sigh came from the pianist. "Kokichi had given me a drink this morning saying that he wanted to do it instead of Rantaro, and since I forgot that it was April Fools Day today I stupidly accepted. It turned out to be a mix or orange juice and milk, and it didn't sit well with me for the first few hours of the day. I didn't want to deal with him at lunch, so I hid in here. I'm a coward, I know." Kaede let out a breathy laugh at the end.
An annoyed frown would have been seen on Maki's face if there was a decent amount of light in the closet, but that wasn't the case.
"So anyway, why are you in here?" Kaede asked. "He pranked me with canned snakes- Kokichi that is. It was sick of everything and just ran off. I don't care if I get found and get a lunch detention at this point. I'm just done with him." She snarled.
A faint giggle out be heard. "What are you laughing at?" She raised a brow. She found it odd how Kaede found their situation funny. "It's just, be both were brought together in this closet through Kokichi pranks. I find it a bit funny."
"You're so incredibly bubbly that it's stupid, do you know that?" She scoffed. "Yeah yeah, I know. Just call me Kaedumb if you want." Kaede let out another laugh.
Oddly enough, she laughed as well. Maybe in a way, that prank that Kokichi pulled wasn't so bad. It was annoying, sure. But it gave her an Kaede an opportunity to just talk with each other, one on one.
God, now she was being stupid.
She felt movement, and realized that Kaede had nudged herself a bit closer to the other. "Maybe that milk and orange juice prank wasn't so bad after all." Kaede smiled, and she was just barely able to see it in the darkness.Soon enough she found herself moving her hand a bit closer to Kaede's, and once she actually touched the blonde's hand she recoils a bit. What was she doing?!
But Kaede just grabbed her hand, and gave her a smile. Holy shit. This couldn't be happening right now. There was no way that she was blushing and holding the hand of her friend in a Janitor's closet of all places. It was foolish and ridiculous.
But, why was she kind of enjoying it?
Just as she and Kaede leaned in closer to each other, she heard the sound of the bell ringing.
Right. They still had the rest of the school day to go.Grumbling, she cautiously opened the door to the hallway to make sure that nobody would see them, before giving Kaede the signal that they were clear.
"You still have to get your backpack, don't you?" Kaede imputed. "Yeah. That's going to be annoying. And I'll probably be teased by Oma for three weeks at least for running away from his stupid, childish prank." She sighed.
She turned her heard to see Kaede giving her a faint yet warm smile at the same time. "I can walk with you if you want. Plus, we both have history next. We can walk to class together. If you want that is." The pianist offered.
Did she want to walk with Kaede?
Yes, yes she did."Whatever. But we should be fast. I don't want to be late for class. You know how our history teacher is." She agreed.
At this, Kaede grabbed her hand and pulled her along at a hasty pace. But all she could think in the moment was how chaotic, yet surprisingly well, her day had gone so far.
