I got off of the bus with them, not that they would notice. The bus driver didn't even see me behind them. He almost closed me in the doors! On the topic of the bus driver, was he drunk? Who drives like that? He was swerving all over the road and speeding over speed bumps. I had half a mind to report him to the Better Bus Driver's Bureau, if such a thing existed. I'd been riding the same bus for 3 years and knew the driver by name. He had never driven so recklessly before.
Eaves dropping wasn't my intention, but the two seemed so awkward that I couldn't resist. At first I thought they knew each other, but it soon became apparent that they didn't. The guy was idiotic, falling all over the bus. I'm not sure if the girl was nice or just feeling a lot of pity. Now they were standing on the street corner just staring at each other. Every now and then, one of them would move slightly and the other would jump as if surprised. They were so engrossed in each other that they didn't even notice me as I slowly drifted past them.
"Clara may I walk you home?" Asked the guy. As I got closer I realized I knew him as "The Dreamer". He was also a bus regular and spent most of his time daydreaming while staring out the window. This wasn't his bus stop. He looked up at the girl hopefully. I thought he was a little cheesy.
"No!" Screamed the girl, Clara. The boy jumped and so did I. Her yelling came unexpected to the both of us. Still they did not notice me watching.
"I mean....err....I have some shopping to do in the area." Said Clara at an incomprehensible speed. In this town, at this hour, on this street she wanted to got shopping? The only things open were Walmart and Waffle House and both those would be closing in the next hour. The boy was visibly saddened by her refusal. I'd never seen such an emotive face on a guy before. They still didn't notice my presence.
"Allow me to escort you shopping then!" Replied the guy. Who knew Dreamer could be so passionate? The girl looked around apprehensively but didn't seem displeased at his request.
"Yes you can come with." Clara answered him shyly. Clara and the Dreamer seemed like a cute couple. After deciding that they would go off into the night together, they snapped out of their self induced trance. They noticed me then. The Dreamer gave me a nod and Clara gave an awkward smile. Without words we walked in opposite directions. I was going toward my house which was also the direction of Walmart and Waffle House. They were headed who knows where.
