"Linh..." Tam whispered softly. Then he let out a soft groan as his eyes blinked closed.

"He got a bad head rush when he stood, and after less than a minute he'd passed out," I explained. Elwin nodded, handing another elixir to Tam, who was awake but silent.

"Well, on the plus side, Tam can go home," Elwin turned to Tam before continuing, "However, I'd like you to hail me daily. If you miss a day, I'm showing up and bringing you here. If I detect anything concerning from you, same thing." Elwin glanced at me. "How about we make that deal with you as well, huh, Keefe?"

I fidgeted with the corner of my cape. Later, Elwin let Tam go home with Linh, and I headed back to Candleshade. Lord Ca— Dad was waiting for me there. I mumbled "hi..." before continuing to my room. I locked the door and layer on my bed, staring at the ceiling.

Five weeks ago, I wouldn't have cared if something happened to Tam Song. But something had changed. I wondered if this was how Sophie had felt when Fitz started dating that one girl, and she realized I'd been here all along.

Obviously I didn't like like Tam. But...when all of my friends were gone, who suddenly seemed like the brightest light I'd ever seen?

Ironic, since he's a Shade.

I heard a gentle rat-tat-tat on my door. "Keefe?" Dad's voice was muffled, but recognizable.

I looked at my door. "Yeah?"
