It was finally dinner time and Nyx was starving.  She looked at her mother expectantly as the woman brought out the large platter of food from the oven and removed the lid off of it.
"What do you want me to put on your plate?" Lana asked.
"Um..." she thought for a minute and decided that one chicken leg would be fine.

The doorbell rang as the room became filled with tension. Lana took a deep breath and started walking towards the front door.

"No wait-" John whisper-shouted at his wife, " Nyx should open the door."

"Why me?!" Nyx jumped. Her parents shushed her as a sign to be quiet.

"Thing of it this way sweetie- you're the kid and they're not mad at you." her father said.

Nyx threw her father a disagreeing expression followed by a long sigh. Withought a word she stood from her chair and walked towards the hallway when the doorbell rang impatiently again.

"Alright, I'm coming!" Nyx said to herself.
After taking a few steps forward she stopped suddenly and her eyes widened. She turned around to her parents and whispered loudly, "They're here!"

The adults felt even worse- their time of trial approached.

Nyx opened the door slowly and smiled as much as possible.

"Hey grandma! Hey grandpa!"

The two old figuires smiled back at the child and went in for a hug.
"Hiya, Nyxy."
"Hello, my darling!"
"Gosh, look at you all grown up,"

"Yeah, yeah alright!" Nyx tried to push herself away from the hugs and kisses of her grandparents.
They all sat at the table together. It was awkward for everyone involved. John kept staring at his daughter worriedly. And Lana kept looking everywhere except at the elders sitting across her.
"I'll go wash my hands," Nyx said and stood up from her seat to avoid the awkwardness.
As she was passing by the table her dad grabbed her arm and pulled her close.
"Nyx please sit down," John pleaded while whispering this to his daughter, "My parents will immediately start a conversation if you go away."

Nyx looked at her dad then at her grandparents, "Shouldn't you guys wash your hands as well?"
The two elders looked at eachother and then smiled at their granddaughter.
"Why yes ofcourse sweetie-"

Nyx smiled mischievously as her grandparents walked past her. She had successfully lured them away from her parents.
She looked back at her father and winked, "Don't worry, I got this."

Nyx knew her father had grown up in a toxic, conservative household. That's the reason why he is such a childish person in his adulthood- his kid-like personality was the core of their father-daughter relationship. Half of the time those two were friends but whenever John needed to be serious he always was.

This particular situation was an exception though. In this situation he depended on Nyx, and she wasn't going to let him down.

"So- grandma, grandpa- what have you been doing?" the girl asked on the way to the bathroom.

"Oh you  know how things are nowadays," her grandmother answered, "There has been alot going on these days with everything with the president, the news of the newscasters, the election, and so forth, it makes us old folks rather exhausted to even think straight. So we have simply gotten stuck in our daily routines, you know?"
"I understand."
"Yes, that's right, so how are you doing my dear?" her grandfather asked concerned.
"Oh I'm doing just fine! My family and I have been doing very well as of recently." Nyx replied. She wanted to bring attention to how happy her family is with Melanie's pregnancy.

Her grandparents smiled slightly and her grandfather patted her on the head.

After washing their hands the three people went back to the dining area. Nyx went past her father again and whispered to him, "Start the conversation first. Trust me."

John gulped and nodded. As much as he hated to he trusted his daughter and took a deep breath.

"Mom, Dad, you may already know this," he started, "but our girlfriend who we very much love is pregnant."

John's parents stared open-eyed, not at the news but rather at their son's courage of speaking up.

Lana was the first to react. She leaned in to kiss John on the lips and give him a soft pat on his shoulders. John looked at his parents who nodded at his action.
He cleared his throat, "Thank you." He said, seeing that they're willing to listen, before continuing.
"We do not care wheter you think it's morally correct for me to have children from two different women while still being married. This is the happiest we've ever been and we will treat this moment for nothing else."

Nyx glaced back and forth between the adults on the table. She leaned in to her left and grabbed Melanie's hand reassuringly.  Melanie who for this whole time hadn't said a single word.

"Melanie is part of our family," John had also started holding hands with his two beloved women. "I think its finally time for you to accept that."

Melanie nodded lightly at her husband and continued to stare at her feet.
Everyone was now silent after his little speech. The tension had spiked as the air around them became heavier to brethe. Something built up inside the woman's heart and finally she let it free. A single tear drop came slowly fown her cheek before she fully broke down.

"T-This is the best family one could wish for " the woman sobbed and whimpered, "And I am so grateful to be part of it."
