Violet's POV
It was a nice, autumn day, and my boyfriend and I were out messing around in the woods. We needed to get away from the world for a while. There's no telling how far out we were. I could only see trees and green all around us.
"You think we should start back?" I asked.
"Nah," Riker said, "We're fine."
He winked and pulled me in for a kiss. We sat down on a broken tree trunk and enjoyed the peace and quiet.
"I could stay out here with you forever," he said sweetly.
I smiled and planted another kiss on his lips. It was easy to just start making out with him, so that's what happened. I loved him, and I was never afraid to show it.
Time passed, and our moment was interrupted by a crunch in the leaves.
"What was that?" I asked quietly.
"Probably just a bird," Riker answered before resuming our kiss.
I tried to ignore it, but the crunching continued. The sound felt close and kept getting louder. I pulled away from Riker and stood up.
"We should go."
Riker laughed. "You're gonna let some leaves scare you away? Come on, Violet."
"Come on, Riker. It sounds like a person. There shouldn't be anyone out here but us."
"I seriously don't think some random stranger is gonna roam around in the woods behind your house on your property."
"You never know! People are crazy."
"Just calm down and relax. We'll be fine. I promi-"
Riker stopped talking suddenly and a horrified look crossed his face.
"What?" I asked.
I turned around and saw a figure limping toward us. I didn't know whether to run or ask if he was okay. I barely had time to think; the strange person was right in front of us. Blood was dripping from his mouth. He let out a groan. Riker and I stood in confusion. The man lunged forward and grabbed my arm. I let out a scream. Riker pulled me away and we ran. The man followed behind us. He was slow but determined. Riker and I made it back to my house safely after what seemed like forever. I locked the door, and Riker and I sunk to the ground.
"I'm sorry," Riker said as he gasped for air, "I'll always believe you from now on."
"Yeah, that's probably best."
I tried to think of something to do. "Should we call the cops?"
"Yeah," Riker said as he pulled out his phone. He dialed 911 and explained what was going on. He put the cop on speaker phone so I could tell them my address. There was suddenly a loud thud at the door.
"He's at the door!" I cried.
"Okay, I need you to calm down. Go find somewhere to hide, make sure all doors are locked. Find something to defend yourself with. Just hang tight and we'll be there soon."
"Okay, thanks," Riker said.
Riker took my hand and led me to the kitchen. He grabbed two knives from the drawer and handed one to me. I didn't question this. We then made our way upstairs and hid in my closet.
I held Riker's hand tightly. "Well, this sucks."
"We'll be okay," he said calmly, "I won't let anything happen to you."
"I love you," I said.
"I love you."
Several minutes passed before we finally heard the sirens outside.
"Should we go out?" Riker asked.
"No, they'll come get us when it's safe."
We waited a little longer, and there was a knock on the closet door. "Police. Open up. You're safe now."
Millions of thoughts raced through my head. What if it's the guy pretending to be the cop? What if all the cops are dead? What if we open the door and get stabbed to death?
Riker must've had the same idea since he held the knife in front of him as he opened the door. Thankfully, it was the cop. I let out a sigh of relief.
"Are you guys okay?" the officer asked.
"Yes, thank you so much."
"No problem. We're taking that guy down to the station. He's a strange one. You all have a nice night. Try to go somewhere and relax. You're safe n-"
"Watch out!" I screamed.
Someone came out of nowhere and began attacking the officer. We stood in shock and realized this thing was biting...eating...the officer. Tears welled up in my eyes. What is going on?!
"Riker, what do we do? It's killing him."
He was silent. I began to panic even more. "Kill it!"
Without hesitation, Riker began stabbing at the horrifying creature. It fought back. Riker held it down and I finally just stabbed my knife through its head. It stopped moving and fell limp.
"I think we got it," Riker said breathlessly.
I sat back against the wall and dropped the knife. "What the hell is going on?"
"I have no idea."
