Sara is ready to cry tears of joy. She is eating steak and loaded potatoes outside with Andrew, Maya, and Emma since there wasn't enough room for three families to sit at the living room table.
Sara is accepted here. Even Andrew is kind to her. A little too kind, though. Sara wonders if he likes her.
It's dark outside, but the porch lights illuminate everything around them. Andrew stares at Sara in wonder.
"So, Sara, can you see in the dark?" Maya kicks Andrew under the table. Emma pauses mid-bite. Sara nearly spits out her diet coke. She wipes her mouth with her napkin and looks at Andrew.
"No. Why does everyone think that? Minus my parents, Maya, and Emma, nearly everyone I've ever met in my entire life has asked me that question."
Andrew doesn't even take a hint. "Why aren't your eyes red?"
Sara doesn't respond. Her eyes water. This time, she's about to cry tears of sadness. Andrew doesn't care about her at all. If he does, then he's doing a really crappy job of showing it.
There's silence. Emma tries to break the ice.
"Hey, guys, wanna play Two Truths and a Lie?"
Maya and Sara smile. Andrew shakes his head. "It gets too repetitive. I'm bored. I want to learn more about Sara."Sara sighs. Later, Andrew draws at Emma's desk. Maya, Sara, and Emma are all playing the card game "Taco, Cat, Goat, Cheese, Pizza" on Emma's bed. Andrew's papers scatter on the floor because he knocked into them. He hurries to gather them. Sara catches a few words on the pages.
Albino. My Hunter.
Andrew wants to use Sara to protect himself. Sara glares at Andrew
"I don't know why you hate me so much, but I am not a killing machine. I belong to nobody."
Sara turns back to the game. Andrew shrugs and goes to the living room. At dessert, Andrew doesn't say a word. However, Sara, Emma, and Maya talk up a storm. Sara smiles. These are her friends. These are the people who get her.
