Wrapped up in the warmth of his bed, Dec was drifting in and out of sleep when the whispering began. A faint voice in the back of his mind, perhaps no more real than his own thoughts; the feeling of a presence in the room. "Declan. Declan, they're gone."

A sensation like a touch on his arm. Declan stirred, unable to shake off the shackles of tiredness, willing himself to either wake up or go further into sleep.

"Declan, you are betrayed." A ghostly voice, ethereal and persistent. Declan snapped open his eyes, sitting bolt upright, looking out into the darkness.

Nothing.

"–She's gone! She's gone!" Evelyn cried out to the others as she ran down the stairs at the institute. "Nyx is gone! They both are!"

Jace leapt from his seat. "I knew it! I knew 'Chris' was not to be trusted." He leant in sarcastically on the name. "What's happened? Did they take anything?"

Evelyn thought for a moment, but shook her head. "No... I don't think so. Nothing that wasn't theirs."

Isabelle, sitting at the table, absentmindedly stirring a mug of something as she watched the goings-on. "Why would they even come here if they were just planning to disappear again? ...Were they hiding or something?"

"Maybe they got what they wanted." Alec said from beside her. "They came for help to cure him. Evelyn had essentially figured out how to do that before they disappeared. Maybe they figured that was close enough and they could carry on from there themselves, and absconded before we had chance to stop them."

"It doesn't matter if he's 'cured' or not." Jace sounded exasperated. "He still has to face justice. We need to know where he is!" He strode towards the door. "Someone tell Jocelyn what's happened. We're going to find them."

"I'm coming too." Evelyn said urgently, following after him. "Just... leave Nyx to me, okay? Let me deal with her."

"I can't make any promises."

Evelyn glanced behind, making sure the others were out of earshot, then stopped him with a firm hand as he stepped outside. "If you harm her, I'll end you."

A/N: I'm already liking this fic so much more than the last version- feeling really confident about this! Next update should be Monday as normal, I just wanted to give it a bit of a jumpstart. XD
