As soon as I got home I couldn't stop thinking about him. It was the weirdest thing. I got up and went into the kitchen, not wanting to wake up Daria, and picked up the phone, dialling in the number I'd gotten earlier, sitting down at the table. It wasn't very long before someone picked up.
"Hello?" I heard his low voice through the speaker and almost felt my heart pick up.
"Hi."
"Oh, hey y/n. I didn't think you'd call so soon. But I'm glad you did."
It was the way he spoke in those short burst sentences rather than full ones, and the way his voice was always quiet and peaceful. I just remember thinking, god, what's happening to me...
"Hello?"
"Sorry, lost in thought. I might take this upstairs, I didn't want to wake Daria up but I'm exhausted."
"But then... Why'd you call?"
"I dont know, I just... felt like listening to you talk or something."
"Haha. That doesn't sound very 'token hetero boy' to me."
"Oh, shut up," I chuckled a bit and traced my finger up and down the back of the phone, trying to keep myself awake with any kind of movement at all. "I'm gonna take this upstairs. If i'm gonna knock out I want to hit my pillow, not a table. I'll call you back." I hung up the phone, went upstairs and picked it back up again, dialling in the number. Trent picked up faster this time.
"Welcome back."
I chuckled a bit and wrapped my blanked around myself. "I'm gonna try and get some sleep. Feel free to hang up whenever."
"Okay," his low voice rasped through the phone, almost putting me in a trance. He started going on and on about the music he was making with his band and it was all making me feel so peaceful. Needless to say I fell asleep pretty fast.
The next morning I woke up to the phone back in its place. I assumed Mom had come in and seen it and put it back.About a week later I got up one morning and got ready for the day as usual.
I went downstairs and Daria was there eating breakfast.
"Hey," she greets.
"Oh, hey D."
"Plans?"
I shrugged. "Nah. I might go hang out at Trent's soon though."
Daria shook her head. "He'll be asleep for a few more hours. I'll tell Jane to tell him to call when he's up, though," she said and stood up, grabbing her backpack. "See ya."
Daria left and I made my breakfast, heading back upstairs to do some classwork I'd missed. It gets to about 1pm and the phone goes off, and a fuse lights inside me. I rush to answer it, and the soft voice I already grew to love came through the speaker:
"Y/n?"
"Hey," I smiled a bit.
"Janie told me to call you. Well... She just left a note. But same difference."
"Can I come over?"
"Why would I say no?"
I practically heard his smirk over the phone. "On my way," I said before hanging up.
Lately there was some kind of feeling building up inside that I couldn't quite place. I thought about it as I stared in the mirror at my outfit for a little too long. I quickly left the house, heading over to Trent's. I knocked on the door and was taken aback at the unusually fast answer. Trent smiled softly. "Hey stranger. Come on in," his voice rang out lower than usual. He must've just woken up. I smiled a bit as well, walking in at the invitation. "So, what prompted this, then?"
"Nothing, really," I shrugged. "Just wanted to see you..." I mumbled, not even sure if I wanted him to hear me. But alas, he did.
"That's sweet of you," he chuckled lowly and ruffled my hair. I was around the same height as Daria, maybe a little taller, so I only really came up to Trent's nose. "You wanna come up?"
I nodded and we went upstairs. We both sat down on his bed. "Nice room," I said, mostly
to fill the silence that was irking me.
"Thanks," he said. "You don't have to sit so far away from me though. I'm not gonna do anything," he laughed a bit. "But by all means, if that's what you want, go for it."
I shuffled a bit closer to him after realising the distance.
"You're quieter today. Anything on your mind?" he asked, after a few moments of silence.
"No, not really. Just a quiet day I guess. Maybe I'm a little down, but I'll be okay," I said. I wasn't one for feeling my emotions. he looked down for a moment, then back up at me.
"You want a hug?" he asked, and I nodded. His arms slowly wrapped around my body, pulling me in. "I hope you feel better."
I hesitated at first but it didn't take me long to adjust to the feeling of his arms around me. I hugged him back and we sort of just stayed like that, Trent adjusting a bit so he could grab his notebook and write something that came to mind.
"can i see?"
"maybe some other time," he chuckled, "everything in here is private." He put the notebook down and wrapped his arms around me again.
"Hey Trent?"
"What's up?"
I paused for a moment. God, was I really about to ask this...?
"You're bi, right?"
Trent nodded.
"How'd you figure it out?"
"I dunno. Just always liked dudes. Never knew there was a name for it, and well, I didn't tell anyone. It was the 70's, I wouldn't be alive right now if I spoke up about it. Brought home my 'best friend' from school — he was my boyfriend — and Mom made a gay joke. I guess that was her way of saying she's safe to talk to, so I did." Trent looked at me, up and down very briefly, and raised an eyebrow. "You having doubts or something?"
"No! Yeah..." I shook my head. That didn't sound right either. "Maybe?"
"Hey, you don't have to know who you are straight away. It takes everyone a little time, even if they do end up straight."
Trent's soothing voice was more calming in this situation, somehow.
"I guess... But I think my dad would have a heart attack if I was anything other than straight."
"That doesn't mean you have to be. What about your Mom and your sisters?"
"My sisters get it, but my parents... I don't know."
"Right, so you'll have Daria and Quinn, you'll have all the Lanes... And there's a lot of us. You've got a lot of people on your side, y/n. But it's okay to be scared as well."
"Thanks Trent."
"The band's gonna be here any minute, I don't know if you wanna get home," Trent looked at the clock on the wall. "Let me go see if Jane's home."
I followed close behind him as he knocked on Jane's door. "Yup."
He opened it. "What can I do ya for, Trent?" she said, adopting a southern accent.
"Just seeing if you're home. I'm gonna drop off y/n at home so get the door if the band gets here before I'm back."
"Yeah, and where have you hidden y/n?" Jane laughed a bit, and Trent stepped aside.
Embarrassing.
I'm so short that I can hide behind his shoulder.
Daria waved and I waved back. "Hey D," I smiled a bit, and she nodded in acknowledgement. She wasn't much for words sometimes, so I came to understand the methods of communication that she preferred.
Trent drove me home and admittedly I wished the drive had lasted longer. Before I got out of the car he wrapped his arm around my shoulders and pulled me in to kiss my cheek. "I'll see you later, y/n. If you need any help with what we talked about, you know where I'll be."
"Asleep?" I joked, and we both laughed a bit. "See ya." I hugged him and then went back inside. I took a deep breath. My chest felt light and I had this floaty feeling. I had no idea what it meant.
"Y/n? Are you okay?" Mom asked, and I was snapped out of my daze, realising my new mission of keeping my feelings secret.
"Yep. Fine," I mumbled and went up to my room.
