Chapter One

The Beginning

[A Lying Witch and a Warden]

Summary: Two human siblings find themselves in a strange new world. I feel like I know this narrative...

Thalia Noceda sat in her algebra class, having a face-off with her sister Luz. The two were making funny faces from their neighboring desks, trying to see who would crack first.

Thalia ended up cracking first and laughed. "You're so childish," she whispered.

"I know," Luz replied, looking very confident. She patted her sister's shoulder with a smile. "See, you don't have to be a stick in the mud all the time."

That's when the phone rang and their teacher, Ms. McCaffery told the class to be quiet as she picked up the phone. "Yes, McCaffery's room. Mhm. I'll send them down now." She hung up the phone and turned to the class. "Noceda twins, the principal called. Bring all your stuff to the office."

Their laughter was short-lived as Thalia scowled at her sister and begrudgingly packed up her backpack. "What did you do?" Thalia asked as they walked down the hall.

Luz shrugged. "I don't know. Maybe you did something."

Thalia scoffed. "Really? I did something? Dude, have you even met me?"

"Nope, you're a total stranger." Thalia playfully slugged her sister in the shoulder, and the sides of her lips curled into a smile.

When they got to the principal's office, the lady sitting at the front desk knitted her eyebrows. It was the last few weeks of school, and she was stillgetting the two mixed up. How dumb was she? And I know what you're thinking, 'Well, she couldn't know all the kids in the school by name.' And you're right, but Luz got the two girls into so much trouble that the secretary might as well know them by name.

"Luz," she said, pointing to Thalia. "And Thalia, right?"

"I'm Thalia," she said. "And this is Luz." Thalia placed a hand on Luz's shoulder.

"Oh, I'm so sorry," she say with a smile. "You two just look so similar."

"We know." They've heard it all, 'you look the same.' 'How does your mother tell you apart?' 'You two could swap places, and no one would know!' While Luz looked like their mom, Thalia was known for looking like her dad. With her darker eyes, long lighter hair, and slightly darker skin. Not to mention she's taller by a few inches, but people just believe what they want.

" Ay, Dios mío, " Thalia said in Spanish.

Luz nodded and replied in the same language. "I know."

Luz and Thalia walked to the principal's office. Sitting there was their mom Camila Noceda dressed in light blue scrubs, brown hair, and round glasses. They sat down, and Mr. Hal ranted about how Luz had been all over the place lately. The final straw was her book report.

Thalia fully supported Luz's reenactment of the Good Witch Azura with dolls and stuff, but she took it too far with the snakes and her 'act three closer.'

"And that's the end," Luz said, holding her snake and Good Witch Azura doll.

"The end of what?" Camila asked. She looked at Thalia with concern on her face. The older twin shrugged as if to say Like I know.

"My book report," Luz replied. Her snake lunged and bit Azura's head. She doesn't seem to notice. "I think I knocked it out of the park." Thalia sighed and pitched the bridge of her nose, shaking her head.
